"How the case against the MMR vaccine was fixed"

An article in the BMJ that you might find interesting.

That's the actual title of the article, in the British Medical Journal. I'm not trying to up the controversy at all.

How the link was fixed

The Lancet paper was a case series of 12 child patients; it reported a proposed ?new syndrome? of enterocolitis and regressive autism and associated this with MMR as an ?apparent precipitating event.? But in fact:

-Three of nine children reported with regressive autism did not have autism diagnosed at all. Only one child clearly had regressive autism

-Despite the paper claiming that all 12 children were ?previously normal,? five had documented pre-existing developmental concerns

-Some children were reported to have experienced first behavioural symptoms within days of MMR, but the records documented these as starting some months after vaccination

-In nine cases, unremarkable colonic histopathology results?noting no or minimal fluctuations in inflammatory cell populations?were changed after a medical school ?research review? to ?non-specific colitis?

-The parents of eight children were reported as blaming MMR, but 11 families made this allegation at the hospital. The exclusion of three allegations?all giving times to onset of problems in months?helped to create the appearance of a 14 day temporal link

-Patients were recruited through anti-MMR campaigners, and the study was commissioned and funded for planned litigation

Shorter summary here.

In multiple ways, the story of the Lancet article was crafted to support the conclusion Mr. Wakefield had?a conclusion he came to before starting on the research project.

Another useful BMJ article.

Clear evidence of falsification of data should now close the door on this damaging vaccine scare

Trillian demonstrating the triumph of hope over experience. The thread is going exactly as anyone could predict. The positions are entrenched - people read what they want to read and interpret it in the light of their opinions. Anecdotes always more persuasive than statistics.

Etc ad nauseum Sad

Grimma - what do you think about the fact that Wakefield has documents which prove Deer was lying in his articles in th eBMJ?

seriously, the documents refute every single one of the fraud/fake/lied about dx allegations made.

silverfrog · 28/01/2011 18:45

Leonie - will be very interesting to see the BMJ reaction to Wakefield's request for a retraction... not holding my breath...

For the record, my beliefs are not entrenched. I am merely a parent of a toddler who happens to be concerned about all jabs.

silverfrog · 29/01/2011 15:15

Tabitha, if you are concerned about jabs, I would recommend reading Richard Halvorsen's book about vaccinations.

He talks about each jab in depth, the reason it is in the schedule, what alternatives may be available, what the likely efficacy rate is etc.

a well balanced book which looks at all sides of the argument.

Tabitha8 · 30/01/2011 17:37

Ah, yes, I read that book. That was the one that first got me thinking about it all.

Appletrees · 01/02/2011 22:34

silver and leonie as ever betterinformed than anyone

i like the tone.. we can stop trying to hide AW in all of this

thank God for him

Agreed. Wakefield is an honest and talented Doctor. The charges against him have all been proven to be false-- a stitch up by the Establishment determined to prop up the fallacy of vaccination and the MMR in particular .
I can't read all the posts, but has anyone pointed out that measles kills one person in 55 million, and mumps and rubella even less? Whether the MMR vaccine is safe is irrelevant. It is a crime to administer it because of the statistics, and because it DOES cause Autism and severe brain damage, as does the Pertussis vaccine.I suggest anyone interested in the truth about all vaccines, none of which has ever been proved to prevent any disease , but only to increase the incidence, should go to ChildHealthSafety, and the Whale Vaccination sites, I don't think you will vaccinate after spending some time getting the facts. Vaccines kill, and are a fraudulent concept masterminded by the Pharmas, the Governments and the Doctors, all of whom benefit from the fraud continuing.
The WHO is on the record saying that those taking the MMR vaccine are 15 times more likely to develop measles than those who don't !! The JCVI stated in 1974 that the MMR vaccine was unnecessary for the reasons stated, so ask yourself why Doctors and the Government are still promoting it? The JCVI is a totally unelected Quango now in complete control of all vaccine decisions. The Government will now only intervene on costs considerations.
If you want to know whether you can trust the JCVI look up Urabe MMR 1988.The JCVI is very closely affiliated with the Pharmas, so how can it be objective?
Just imagine how much money could change hands if the JCVI decided all vaccines should be mandatory?

Quillan · 09/07/2011 11:53

We all agree that the News of the World revelations are scandalous, and terribly hurtful to those families who have suffered from this treatment but let's put things into perspective.
Lying about the harmful effects of vaccines and failing to tell Parents that there is absolutely no evidence that any vaccine protects against any disease, is a far more serious deception with dangerous lifelong consequences.

Some Doctors aware of this, now reckon that maybe 50% of all cancers originate from Vaccines. One Doctor is on the record as stating he had seen 200 cancer cases. All had had some vaccinations. He had never come across an unvaccinated patient with cancer. Certainly all Polio vaccines from the outset and for 50 years contained the SV 40 simian monkey cancer cells, so most of us could still be a cancer victim from the Polio Vaccines. Maybe that''s why 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime? [Vitamin D will prevent 76% of cancers. Take 500iu daily. Cost about 5 pence from BigVits., who are the only supplier I know of in the UK who sell 5000iu capsules , so I am not trying to promote them.

Did you realise the UK Government has compensated 900 severely brain damaged children after the Pertussis vaccine? Yet they continue with the lies that all vaccines are safe and effective. This vaccine has been known to cause brain damage for 50 years.

From the Whale Vaccination site. For those who really believe vaccines are safe.
"The carnage caused by vaccinations has become so immense, and the outcry from the grieving parents so intense, that the government has set up a national compensation program in order to smooth everything over and to protect drug companies and doctors from law suits. You, of course, pay for this insurance for drug companies and doctors by the cost being added to the price of the vaccines. In 1982, the vaccines cost $23 per child. By 1992, the cost had risen to $244--an increase of over 1,000 percent!
This devastation of our children by our own doctors and public-health departments has been so colossal that over $249 million has been awarded for vaccine-caused injuries and deaths, and the program is now bankrupt.Thousands of cases are pending that will receive nothing--the pay window has been slammed shut.
Even if you got lucky and received "compensation," will that make up for your child's permanent paralysis ("Guillain-Barre syndrome"), blindness ("idiopathic macular degeneration"), mental deficiency ("learning disorder"), or uncoordination ("tardive dyskinesia")? Will all those phoney diagnoses used to cover up the real diagnosis help? Will a million dollars make everything okay? Ten million?"---William Douglas MD

has anyone pointed out that measles kills one person in 55 million

no, nobody has, because it is not true. Death rate in the developed world is about 1 reported death per 500 to 4000 (average 1000) reported cases. The fact that the overall number of deaths is low in Europe is that people overall are quite good about vaccinating, otherwise, the UK would see upwards of 100 deaths per year. France has had 6 deaths so far this year with more from SSPE to be expected in the coming decade.

bumbleymummy · 09/07/2011 15:45

1 in 8-10,000 in developed countries. Not sure where 1 in 55 million came from.

Measles in UK

CatherinaJTV · 09/07/2011 20:10

Bubbley - I think the poster meant deaths per inhabitants rather than measles cases.
