Flu symtoms and very painful back - is it flu & can you get it twice in 2 weeks?

I was really ill last week, temp went to 40.3, couldn't move etc. etc. for a few days, it eased but now a week later it's starting again. Temp is lower (39 something) , can obviously move (couldn't 'til now though) but my back is so so sore. It feels like someone has smashed my spine with a hammer. Everytime I google flu not much is mentioned about a sore back - could it be something else, esp. as it's come back?

Back pain can be associated with a urine infection (kidney involvement) but viruses can cause aches pretty much anywhere and there are some VERY nasty viruses out there at the mo.

I had this - it was flu but I got checked out for a uti as it could have been that and those don't get better on their own.

It was extremely painful; I couldn't sleep. Ended up keeping ibuprofen by my bed and taking it on a strict 6 hour regime with Calpol in between if it got really bad.

I think you can get two different strains in a row - sorry, that sucks and hope you feel better soon.

Years ago, the practice nurse at the surgery gave me some sterile containers and said if I though I had a uti to fill one up and drop it off and they'd test it. Maybe you could ring and see if they'd do that for you? Saves you going in (if you can get someone to pick up / drop off, I mean)

Have you got any spots on your back?

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 31/12/2010 10:55

Sounds like a kidney infection, I had one once and thought it was a back injury, because it was so painful, just like you describe.
You should get to see a Dr and get antibiotics straight away, will clear it right up. No point suffering over NY closed period...

No spots - are you thinking shingles? I've already had it and it's twinging now I'm ill :( (on head) Not been to docs yet, was thinking of trying to drink alot first? What do they give for kidney infection because I have alot of anti-bs in my cupboard (not good at finishing courses!)

Don't know if this is flu but you definitely get it twice close together. I recently had flu and dostor advised me to get the flu jab (I'm pregnant) as soon as I was well so I didn't get another strain.

Hope you feel well soon

schroeder · 31/12/2010 19:19

Yeah didn't want to say it, but when I had shingles it was on my back, the spots were so painful I just thought you should check. I'm glad it's not that shingles is nastyGrin

You really should finish you antibiotics Shock

Yeah I know lol, but I got alot for Mastitis which cleared itself etc.
