Am going to start Champix tomorrow. Read alot of horror stories. Really interested to hear about your experiences.

Not my experience but my mum: She smoked for 40+ years and gave up on Champix. She didn't seem to suffer any symptoms at all - she'd have moaned about them if she did!

Good luck! She also attended a group and found that helpful too.

BongoWinslow · 15/12/2010 00:26

my DH was a committed smoker for 14 years - gave up on champix first go when nothing else worked. swears by it.

good luck!

my sister and partner gave up using champix too - he was ok but she felt extremely sick with them.

mspotatochip · 15/12/2010 21:29

Dp has just been prescribed them, I'm apprehensive. He says doc said they make some people suicidal? He seemed unammused when I said how would I tell when you are trying to quit fags you are always grumpy/ withdrawn/ irrational!!

KissingSantaUnderThePurpleToes · 15/12/2010 21:35

I felt sickly with them too but I just did the opposite of what it tells you to do i.e. take on empty stomach/ I took after food or vice versa iyswim Xmas Grin but other than that they were great.

Sidge · 15/12/2010 21:42

Good luck!

I'm a practice nurse doing smoking cessation, and have had loads of people quit on Champix with me.

I'm particularly proud of my 55 year old chap who smoked 40 a day for 45 years, and has quit for 6 months now after having 12 weeks of Champix. It's fab!

I've only had a few patients stop taking it because of side effects, and just one that it didn't 'work' for but she wasn't remotely motivated and I suspect she wasn't taking them properly.

Just need to get DH on it now Xmas Wink

expatinscotland · 15/12/2010 21:46

It's what DH will use next time he quits. He's tried patches already.

good luck with it farfaraway

hoarsewhisperer · 16/12/2010 13:11

i used this to give up and have not had a ciggie since may 2009, so i can safely say it was a big sucess. Only side effect i had was very very vivid dreams, some of which were "ahem", not entirely unpleasant involving as they did G.Clooney esq.

have subsequently had 2 friends who have also used it to sucessfully give up

FarFarAway · 16/12/2010 15:15

ha ha looking forward to vivid george clooney dreams now. Day 2 and already feel less of urge to smoke. Gave up 7 years ago cold turkey and very stupidly started again a few months ago. Feel very motivated and ready for success after all your stories. Have felt a bit headachy today too Lunatic but hoping is just a coincidence.

Go to a weekly group too if you have time/one near by.
Started champix ( mad mad dreams ) then stopped champix as had very sore head, 2 days after my quit day. 3 weeks later, still off the fags. Been "emotional" and grumpy at times but no urge to smoke.
I'm sure this is because I really don't want to smoke anymore, but also going to the group is motivating in itself. Weekly check in and chat, but also for me talking to people older than me who are stopping because if they don't now, they will die very soon.
Lady in other week said she was stopping because a month ago she had a heart attack in the supermarket ... ( only 15 years older than me )...
Also an 80 year old man pops in occasionally. He couldn't walk across a room 2 years ago, now walks 3 miles a day, because he quit.

pipsqueak · 17/12/2010 22:33

i swear by them . smoked 20 a day for 20 + years an d gave up so eaily with chammpix. no side effects at all - nor dh who took them too . go for it and good luck!

LJBanana · 29/12/2010 18:15

My DP has been taking champix for a few weeks, been successful, but has given him the most horrendous wind ever imaginable!!!!

MUM0608 · 29/12/2010 21:54

I am currently quiting with champix.

I have been on them for 8 weeks and have not had a ciggerette for 6 weeks Grin. I dont have the full dose as I suffer with headaches and other problems so I asked for the 0.5mg (the first ones, they are little white tablets,

my dp has quit with champix in may this year after 3 times of trying with them, He could not stand the blue tablets (1mg) so he got the 0.5mg and has been quit since.

DP and I both went to the same group which is held every week by smoking cesstation specialists and they are really helpful.

GoodLuck.

Any news on the project. I've been trawling for champix threads because I'm on day eight and have started puking today. Seem to be cutting down the fags though so I guess it must be working. Did have a Chinese take away tonight though so might be the lemon chicken and not the Champix.
