Mirena Coil problems

I just went to have the mirena coil fitted and the nurse/gp could not get it in! Said everything was too small/tight.
After a LA, pain and a lots of attempts we gave up.
Has anyone else had this problem? The only way I can get one now is by GA.

I had similar problems when I had my mirena fitted - and then clamped down so hard from all the tension (I defy anyone to relax under those circumstances!)that she couldn't get the big metal duck beak thingie back out, my Gynie actually suggested that the problem stemmed from my having been abused in the past (which I had most certainly not) - cack handed witch!

As an aside, the Mirena made me incredibly ill and I ended up having to have an operation to fix the problems - during which they fitted a standard coil which has been absolutely fine.

The pain was horrific, the staff were so sympathetic though. They felt really bad.
I have read some old threads and I see that is hurts some people but I felt like someone was trying to shove an icepick through my cervix!!!

I had one fitted a year ago, by my gp, she was gentle and careful and I had no real discomfort at all. Could be the person who was trying to do it....mind you I have had 3 dc and nothing is a small or tight as it used to be Xmas Grin sorry tmi!

I have no children so think that could be a problem. I can understand some pain. I have a low cervix so smears and sex hurt sometimes. But apparantly my cerival OS is to narrow. She was gentle but it was like trying to get a hippo through the eye of a needle apparantly.

The trouble is that once you have had a horrid experience it makes going back for more even more nerve-wracking than usual. Is the mirena your only option? Is it worth having a general for?
You could see if they will let you drag on some gas and air whilst they do it, which will help you relax and deaden the pain a little. It's not as bad as a general and you only need to use as much as you feel necessary rather than knocking you out altogether - but you may have to get someone to drive you home afterwards. Good luck

We ended up whacking an implant in my arm for now. I need it more for period control then contraception.

They got other nurses in and they all said the same thing. Cervix is miniscule. I need to get it looked at. There is no hope in hell of getting it in without an excavator, head torch and a deep sea drilling team Grin

I'm surprised they didn't explain to you that as you haven't given birth it would be very painful.

So sorry you had such a crappy experience.

HowsTheSerenity · 08/12/2010 14:34

They said it would hurt but they did not expect my cervix to be so tightly closed and that is why it hurt so much.

They told me I also have a small cervix, she said the mirena was bigger then my cervix and she managed to get it in.....problem now is they cant get it out was excruciating even looking for it that I fainted, have had 4 drs who are unable to find it and now have a gynae appointment next Wednesday to locate it.

SparkleRainbow · 08/12/2010 16:13

ooo not good, not good at all. Are you all right mumof2?

mumof2terrors · 08/12/2010 17:58

lol im fine now, i fainted at the clinic so am going to ask to be sedated when they remove it. funny thing is i have had 2 kids both over 8lbs at birth but yet cannot handle this type of pain. The mirena has caused me non stop bleeding, headaches and weight gain (from size 6 to a size 12) just cant wait to have it removed!
