thanks moo.

Gawd, no, seive, I don't smoke the odd ones. I'd be done for if I did! I also didn't do NRT, I went cold turkey. It was tough to begin with but at least I got it all over with in one go!

I don't think you can have the odd one Sievehead - so don't convince yourself you can!
I know that routine - I'll just have one as a treat, turns into, well, I'll just smoke tonight since I am out / because this is a difficult situation. Which turns into, well, I have some left in the packet so I may as well finish them. And when you have done that at lunchtime, well you can't stop midday so you will just smoke for that day....
And you are done for!

You are doing so so well, don't take one puff even! It gets easier, honestly it does - I still suffer from the "its a treat" syndrome after 3.5 monhts, and very new things - like writing lists for Christmas felt odd without a cigarette, but you DO get there

sievehead · 16/10/2005 21:18

Thanks, thanks and thanks again you lot - you are BRILL.

I've managed to natter on phone to mates, drink gin, cook roast dinner - (my fave fag of the week used to be out the back door while cooking roast listening to charts!!!!!) and now glass of red wine - all without having a fag. I have been outside and sniffed my hubbies ciggie though! Am feeling quite pleased with myself now - another day.......

Lets hope tomorrow is a good day too.... When does it start getting easier (I've been 8 days now)....?

sievehead · 16/10/2005 21:19

Have just re-read my posts on here. I promise you I am not an old lush - even though I sound like one!!! All I ever talk about is cappucinos, gin and tonics and glasses of red wine... oh, and fags!!!!

mummylonglegs · 16/10/2005 22:07

I AM an old lush, sieve! Where would I be without my evening beers ...

You're doing really well. Basically you'll be over the worst of the cravings at 8 days but IME it's a good 2 weeks before you realise you're thinking about it a lot less. then after a month you can go whole long blocks of time without it entering your head. By 3 months it's an occasional urge and really easy to resist. So long as you get it out of your head that you're depriving yourself!

am still sucking niccy lozzies all the damn time but will cut this week - promise charliebat! Mind you will be at my mum's from tue-thur so might get a bit twitchy and craving them wee white pills...

Dropinthecauldron · 17/10/2005 08:44

Sievehead-8 days-you are really doing fantastic-it will get easier and easier.I would say that if you have gone this long without any form of NRT,then try to resist starting it now.

Fixating on a Cigarette

----------------

What happens to some people is that when they are off smoking for a certain time period they start fixating on a cigarette. By that I mean they forget all the bad cigarettes they ever smoked, they forget the ones they smoked without ever really thinking about them even at the time they were being smoked, and they start to remember and focus on one good cigarette. It may be one they smoked 20 years earlier but it was a good one and they now want one again.

It's a common tactic for the ex-smokers to try and tell themselves that they do not really want that "good" cigarette. Well, the problem is, at that moment they really do want it. An internal debate erupts, "I want one, no I don't, one sounds great, no it doesn't, oh just one, not just one!" The problem is that if the ex-smoker's focus is on just "one" cigarette then there is no clear-cut winning side to the debate. The ex-smoker needs to change the internal discussion.

Don't say that you don?t want one when you do, rather acknowledge the desire but ask yourself, "Do I want all the other cigarettes that go with it. Then, do I want the package deal that goes with the others? The expense, social stigma, smell, health effects, possible loss of life. Do I want to go back to smoking, full-fledged, until it cripples and kills me?"

Stated like this it normally is not a back and forth debate. The answer will normally be, "No, I don?t want to smoke under these terms," and those are the only terms that a cigarette comes with.

Normally if viewed like this the debate is over almost immediately after being pulled into focus. Again, if the focus is only one, you can drive yourself nuts throughout the entire day. If you focus on the whole package deal, you will walk away from the moment relieved to still be smoke free and sufficiently reinforced to NEVER TAKE ANOTHER PUFF!
