DP has a hernia - advice needed please

He has been told by the GP that he will have to wait until the end of December for an appointment at the hospital and he won't get an appointment for the operation until some time after that.

Is it worth paying to go private? How much discomfort will he be in until the op?

Is he in a lot of pain at the moment?

I've just had a hernia op., I felt discomfort rather than pain while I was waiting (mine took about 3 and a half months from seeing the GP to the op. - I was offered a cancellation)

It's a one day procedure, and recovery has been OK.

I guess it partly depends on what kind of hernia it is, - he may very well be OK, but just keep an eye on it, and meanwhile if it gets very painful, or suddenly painful, get medical attention.

He is uncomfortable and you can really see it and feel it when he is standing up but when he is laid down it doesn't give him as much trouble.

He has been told not to do anything strenuous until he has it sorted, if he had to wait for 3.5 months like you had to that would be a pain for him as he likes golf etc. How did you manage on that front?

I just carried on as normal, - like I say it wasn't to bad for me, it just sort of pulled a bit if I overdid it. They are more apparent when you stand (they examine you standing). But it does depend a lot on the hernia - mine was in my abdomen, my dad had one in his groin and that was more painful I think.

If it's very painful though, I would go back to GP and see if it can be hurried along. Mine was fairly easy to push back in, and was quite large (I think the larger ones are a bit less of a problem than smaller ones oddly). So if his is smallish and feels like a sort of hard lump, I think it would be worth getting rechecked, or if it is feasible going private.

He will need to allow for a reasonable recovery time when he has his op., I had mine three weeks ago, and although I can walk about, go shopping etc., I can't do my usual keep fit/yoga etc. - and its still a bit sore. But it's done by laparoscopy so no big cut which is good.
