SHOULD i GO FOR A 'SECOND OPINION'

Here's the deal...
just been to hospital day surgery to have a 'diagnostic laparascopy' to see what's causing my pains/problems linked to my cycle etc.

The op report states no abnormalities found but also that there is a cyst on might right ovary of 5cm (woudnlt that count as an abnormality?).

Anyhow they just closed me up and left the cyst. When they told me I had just come round from the anastaetic so wasn't thinking clearly. And they told me that cysts don't generally hurt...

However... if I do my layman's maths...
pressure sentive lower right abdomen (no apendix left) + slight swelling felt on the right during internal examination = cyst might be the cause? Even if the cyst itself doens't hurt wouldn't something the size of an egg cause discomfort/pain if pushing against something else in there!?

Especially as they were already 'in there' couldn't they just have drained it even if it's just to see whether it was the cyst that caused the trouble?

So now I'm torn whether to go and seek a second opinion on what to do... really don't fancy another op just to get that thing out now.

I know 'remote diagnistic' isn't a thing to do but I still would be thankful for any comments/suggestions.

i had cysts on my ovaries that caused me tremendous pain. i also had a laparoscopy and tests done, but to remove the cysts i had to have a proper op after.

Have you got a follow up outpatients appointment?

It may depend on what type of cyst as to whether they would do anything about it. Do you know what type it was?

I had a diagnostic lap for suspected endometriosis and they found a large "chocolate" cyst on one ovary. This was left as it was because (as I understand it) draining this type of cyst can make things worse.

Instead I was started on 6 months zoladex injections to shrink endo & reduce the cyst.

Best to make a list of your questions to go over with the Dr when you go for your follow up. If you haven't got a follow up appt - then I think back to your GP to ask the same questions. And to ask why you haven't got a follow up!

well my follow up appointment is going to be in 3 months! gotta love the NHS waiting game...

No statement was made re what kind of cyst it is I'm afraid. Wasn't quite thinking clearly after waking up when the SHO told me about it...

Might go and see my GP on Monday or so just for a quick chat to see what he or she thinks (hardly ever get to see the same Dr twice at our surgery, but all of them are alright ;) )

I had a 7cm cyst on my ovary which I had no idea I had, found as I was just beginning at IVF cycle. They drained it and it came back, still no pain so had to have it cut away and a very small part of my ovary too. So, in answer to your question you can have cysts and no pain

I had a burst cyst which caused me tons of pain but it was a bit of a shock when they told me as I had had no discomfort or pain at all prior to it bursting.

my surgeon said they couldn't 0physically remove the cysts via the lap (don't think it is ever as simple as 'draining' them tbh) - it was really just to make sure they weren't cancerous (though they didn't tell me that beforehand, thank god)
i had to wait a little while for the follow up surgery which left me with the same scar as for a c-section.

Aloha... such a big cut for a 'little' cyst? OUCH!

It wasn't so bad, really. And I've 'used' the scar twice since them for my c-sections!

I did have two orange-sized cysts though, one on each ovary. But had a fantastic surgeon, Mr Mason at St Mary's who really worked hard to preserve my fertility (perhaps after I wrote all over my consent form that nobody could remove my ovaries even if I had cancer or I would sue!).

btw mine hurt like hell because they were pressing on nerves in my back. Agony.

And I've never had a twinge since. Hooray.

well I keep insisting that my lower back pain is cyclical and if a cyst on the ovary can push on a nerve... maybe I am right! Well I've written to my doctor at the hospital to clarify whether they've done anything or whether she think it will become necessary and then I'll go private in the hope that something will be sorted soon.

Thankfully I've got my lot in kids so not too worried if fertility goes 'down the drain.' glad to hear yours worked out alright Aloha.
