Diabetes/male fertility/miscarriage

DP has just had a tentative diagnosis of diabetes from doctor (based on urine test, he needs to have a blood test which he will do later this week).

I had heard something about this affecting male fertility so I googled and the article I found suggested it affects the quality of the sperm and so as well as fertility problems can often cause miscarriage.

Our background is 3+ years ttc number one in which time we've suffered 3 mc's.

What I have been trying to find out but can't is whether or not the sperm will be a better quality once the diabetes is under control, or if the effect is permanent. Does anyone know?

TIA
