Thrush- never seem to be fully rid of it and fed up!

Hi all

Would appreciate some advice- I have had recurring bouts of thrush for the past 3 years, which I usually treat with the oral tablet and cream. Our chemist usually dispenses these so haven't seen a GP. I was concerned DH and I were passing it between us so the chemist advised him to use the cream for 2 weeks (and abstain from "marital relations" until after then) in spite of him not having symptoms. However, I am still plagued with thrush, it seems to come back within a couple of weeks or less of treatment. The only time it completely cleared up for six months was after the birth of DD2.
What can I do? Never used to suffer until thse past few years and don't know why I get it so much now. I am so fed up of it!!

When I had thrush when pregnant, the doctor prescribed me 9 pessaries to take, one every day until it was sorted. This did help.

I would go to the GP - it could be that your diet is promoting the thrush. Also could be that you and your DH are still passing it between you.

Thrush is horrible - hope you get it sorted soon.

Ask your GP to prescribe Fluconazole which you take for about 6 months.

Have you had swabs done and tests to rule out diabetes etc?

How's your diet?

Do you crave sugary refined carbs? Bread, cakes etc. Mushrooms and potatoes are also said to feel the bacteria. It lives naturally in your gut, but when it is imbalanced you have a flare up. Plenty of live, natural yogurt helps.

I did the Harcombe Diet - the first 5 days is a detox (its low carb, but big on protein and veg) it completely sorted me out - and I suffered for years.

Thanks all. I don't usually eat all that much refined carbs/sugary foods as did read before that these can make thrush more likely, but have to admit to having a few too much in the past few weeks of these foods thanks to various birthdays etc...

Will go to GP and try to get the other meds. I assume I don't have diabetes or anything more sinister as had a fairly thorough postnatal blood tests (due to having had pre-eclampsia) and recent seagoing medical that didn't pick up any probs...

Actually, bacteria are good in the gut - the thrush is a type of fungus. So probiotics can be useful too - you want to do everything to shift the balance of power in your gut from the thrush to the good bacteria.

Stress is the other big factor for me. Not only because I tend to eat cake when stressed , but also because it tends to know back my immune system and give the thrush a head start.

Definitely time to go to your GP and try more powerful treatment, as well as the changes in lifestyle, by the way.

I've had thrush more on than off for the last 20 years. Since the birth of my last child (just over five years ago) it's been more or less constant with just standard monthly fluctuation - I can control it but I can't clear it.

I have the same problem.

I can sometimes go for a few weeks without it but it always comes back. Thrush does get immuned to drugs, canestan stopped working so my dr prescribed daktarin which also stopped being effectve so I went back to canestan.

I did try the Harcombe diet but it didn't really help. Did lose 7lbs in one week though!!!
