Been feeling generally awful with IBS symptoms and loads of bloating and wind, just gone through a whole series of invasive and stressful tests 'ahem' down below and nothing to see but 2 weeks ago had a lactose intolerence test that was off the scale positive. Immediately gave up milk but still feeling no better and started to feel very 'acidy' and still very bloaty and gassy consultant insisted that i do a glucose intolerence test which involved drinking 2 bottles of lucozade on an empty tum, that night and ever since have developed horrendous acid reflux so bad that I cant sleep and feel like my mouth and throat are full of acid all the time - anybody had this and does it go away? Feeling very down tearful and depressed...

Ask your GP for some medicine. I get awful heartburn & acid reflux at times. I now have Lansoprazole, very low dose to keep for emergencies. If I take one tablet every other day it all stops (but I forget!).

Reflux is horrible so please don't suffer. In the meantime can you buy some over the counter acid indigestion tablets?

I find Zantac very good for heartburn

sodtheironing · 13/11/2010 22:46

I had just started taking Omneprazole a couple of weeks ago which i think may be similar but actually stopped it today as I thought it might be the cause of the symptoms it seems so strange have never had any acidy symtoms before and then they start while i'm taking an acid reducing medicine but thought the Doc thought the omneprazole might help the windy gurgly stuff. I guess my digestive system has been totally stressed by all the tests but i just needed to know from someone that this might be a temporary thing. Have been taking Zantac today but still having problems....

Pineapple at night sounds good, I'll try that!

I've had this on and off for years and am recently having a spate of it again. I am taking Gaviscon before bed and that is proving quite good...

ppeatfruit · 16/11/2010 14:04

I second the pineapple, you could also try bicarb of soda; quarter tsp. with 1 tblsp of lemon juice on an empty stomach and a glass of water. For IBS symptoms try half tsp of turmeric mixed with olive oil morning and night.

ppeatfruit · 16/11/2010 14:17

Oh I forgot to say with the bicarb you have to wait for the bubbling to totally subside before drinking.

Elibean · 16/11/2010 16:14

Start with Zantac. If that doesn't help (and you can take up to two at a time, before bed is good because lying down is the worst!) then go to your GP and ask about Omeprazole or Lansaprazole. I think you can get Omeprazole over the counter now, but tbh I would a) get it on prescription and b) good idea to discuss ongoing heartburn with GP, really.

Its awful, I had it severely in both pregnancies - it definitely does need treating (can cause damage if it goes on too long) and you have my sympathy.

ps pineapple actually gives me heartburn. So no, not for everyone!

franfoxy2003 · 17/11/2010 21:13

i have had acid reflux since i was pg with my ds who is nearly 5

i have severe reflux and am on omeprazole everyday and live on gaviscon too, im off to docs friday to beg her to do something because its got to the point i cant have ANYTHING without getting reflux, it pretty much rules my life.

i too have IBS but havent been told its related.

ppeatfruit · 18/11/2010 10:13

franfoxy my DD had IBS was told by her doc. to give up wheat and dairy is better now! it would probably work for acid reflux too. Careful with the antacids they can make reflux worse!
