My dh is out at the mo and NHS direct have decided that sleeping and not answering is better than talking to me Smile

I slipped on a pavement on Thursday and have taken an 1 inch+ area of skin off just under my knee. I have soaked it in the bath to try to make sure it was clean and puts lots of savlon on.

It has been covered during the daytime and weeping, let it breathe last evening and it looked like it was scabbing over.

Covered it for nighttime as the pain when anything touches it is really not nice. It is still burning and weeping though.

I have taken the dressing off just now and it has green yellow gunk all over it. The edges are not particulary red, but one side is warm and painful to touch.

Do i clean it off, leave it or find the nearest nurse?

Any thoughts most welcome, as i can't walk well and am a bit stuck for the next hour.

I'm no medical expert but I'd soak a cotton wool pad in tcp and leave it on the graze for a few minutes, make sure it's really clean and then see what happens over the next few days.

I had the same thing once and it cleared up by itself. iirc the advice I got from a pharmacist was to seek medical advice if there seemed to be an area of redness around the wound which was expanding.

..... although mine wasn't burning. Hmmm, maybe see a pharmacist?

Do you have any Tea Tree Oil? I find that fab for infections. Or Manuka honey?

BangingNoise · 13/11/2010 10:32

TCP and keep it uncovered so it dries out.

Sounds like it's been allowed to stay soggy too much - you need to let it dry out, so keep it uncovered, don't cover it again, and it should sort itself out.

If you find the redness around it is increasing during today then go to a pharmacist and try to get some antibiotic cream.

Hopefully it should be fine.

Keep an eye on the area around it. If the warm painful area spreads you should see a nurse/doctor.

I scraped my arm once against a wall and took a thin layer of skin off. Thought nothing of it at the time, but a few days later it was infected and the whole arm swelled up, to the point where I couldn't use that arm at all and have to have antibiotics.

I would get that checked out. I don't think you will get antibiotic cream without a prescription, and sounds like you need some.

Thanks for your all your advice.

I've been to a walk in centre where my knee grossed out the other waiters Grin

Doc has cleaned it, put this brown skin thingy over it plus a dressing. She said to keep it dry and check on monday. If it doesn't look pussy, then leave to dry. If it is red, swollen or pussy go to the doc and get some antibiotics.

Thanks again
