I am very upset and in pain.
I've discovered something which I think is herpes. I don't know much about STIs though but this is my guess based on internet research.

I went to a GUM clinic after work yesterday and they took some swabs.

I was so so embarassed and worried.
They weren't sure what it was.

But today I think it is obvious to me that it is getting worse and it must be herpes or similar. I can hardly think of going to work as it hurts and worse, and yet I don't want to take a day off.

I'm practically hysterical and called my GP but they just gave me a list of clinics to visit.
I've booked an appointment with my nurse but that will be on Friday.

I've been to one GUM clinic and have to wait 2 weeks for the results.
can I get something over the counter? Should I miss work to go to another clinic? I feel really ashamed... The only person I can talk to about it is my boyfriend, and I don't even know if I got it from him or if I had it before!?
Sad

The whole area seems to be 'buzzing'!

Period will not affect it.

Also, please remember that herpes is not the scary problem that you think it is. It was a pharmaceutical company that started the scare int he 70's and 80's to sell acyclovir.

CHicken pox is a type of herpes. You would not panic about that. So is glandular fever.

A topical anesthetic cream can help at the moment too. Stop the itchiting/pain.

I need to try to do something about it. I cannot imagine going to work today. I could hardly sleep anyway so I'll be falling asleep today. What on earth can I say to them? Its a new job. I could say I think I've got flu as that's how I've been feeling this week.

Say you have the flu or a kidney infection to your work and don't worry about that. There's no point going into the office when you're exhausted and sore.

Do what the other posters have said, try to be calm. It's just coldsores and once you have been diagnosed and prescribed medication they are very manageable.

If you are at home all day then keep the area clean and dry. Put your bum in a bath with plain table salt in it and then some sites even recommend drying your bits with a hairdryer (on cool!).

takingchances · 03/11/2010 07:24

Ooops...Should have said "a bath with plain table salt DISSOLVED in it".

marriednotdead · 03/11/2010 07:52

Don't go to work, tell them you have a viral infection (true).

I've PM'd you.

OnceUponA · 03/11/2010 08:03

Aw you poor sod. A local anaesthetic cream can help, you up for going back to GP? Ask for EMLA cream 5% although apparently over the counter pile relief is meant to be good too.

Don'[t go to work. Say you have flu as that is exactly how it feels. Pop a cold tea bag on your bits or a cold bottle of water. Don't worry, it doesn't last that long really.

I feel really sorry for you, OB's are so sore! No need t panic though, you wouldn;t worry if it was a cold sore would you? Smile

Hi hysterical

I have no advice for you as am lacking in knowledge about it myself but I've suffered from what I suspect to be herpes for a couple of years, this thread has reinforced my feeling that it is what I suffer from.

Dh has suffered from it for a bout 10 years, a GUM clinic diagnosed but said there was no medication or treatment, his flares up when he's stressed probably 4 to 8 times a year.

I got my first episode Christmas 2 years ago. We've always been really careful and dh had been clear for a while so not sure about whether he passed it to me.

The first certainly was the worst, I cried for 2 days it was so painful, it was bleeding and my skin kept getting stuck to my underwear/pads where it was weeping (tmi!) oh it was truly hideous. I had the flu-like symptoms too. Mine is like blisters and sores, and tends to stay around the labia, dh's is more rash-like with blisters and spreads more widely and concentrates around his anus.

It hasn't been as bad since that first time, but it's still pretty uncomfortable and painful at times.

I didn't go to GP until I'd had it a couple more times I was too embarrassed, but I was getting so fed up with it flaring up. But nurse at doctors didn't say anything, just that she'd take swabs, which came back clear and she said no more - so I'm none the wiser officially.

Sounds like I should get it checked again, and hopefully you'll get a positive outcome from the clinic where they might give you some treatment, and there definitely are lots of people who only get it once, hopefully you're one of them! dh and I are unlucky I guess.

That probably doesn't help you at all but just wanted to say you are not alone!

HystericalMe · 03/11/2010 09:07

Hi embarrassed, please don't be too embarrassed to go back to the nurse. A GUM clinic might be worth a try?

I hope my swabs don't come back clear because that wont help.

Oh the GUM clinic were able to give me medicine, so I'm at home taking that. Hope it all clears up in a couple of days.

Its a bit better now, so thanks everyone for all the reassurance, but I wonder if being scared to go to the loo at work is a good enough reason to stay off work!!!

GoodDaysBadDays · 04/11/2010 16:05

Glad you're feeling better!

I reckon that's definitely a good enough reason to have a couple more days off!
