Hi, my ds is 8 months and he's just woke up crying very unlike him when taking his temperature it's only read at 34.2 which is very low, do i need to be concerned?

Do you know what his usual temperature is? Does he feel cold?

I think it's unlikely to be that low in fact, more likely a duff reading - could be that his ears are full of wax. Try cleaning his ears a bit if so and take some more readings. Is he calming down at all?

given him some calpol and he has now gone off to sleep again, he does feel cold though.

we took reading from his armpit

DS used to give a low reading about two days before he got a cold or a new tooth. Don't worry too much but keep a weather eye on him.

Oh, guess his armpit wasn't full of wax then?! Hope he's OK now.

like you said sherlock he is now full of a cold so that may have explained it.

many Thanks

jambo, did you know that armpit temperature readings are usually lower than those taken in the mouth or ear. I only know this because dd used to get terrible high temperatures and the doctor told us that armpit temperatures are quite unreliable, especially in a baby as it's hard to get them to be accurate (as they wriggle around too much!). Have you got an ear thermometer? They are much easier to use and much quicker!

Here's the net doctor blurb taking temperatures
