Collapsed Lung

Just heard that my db has been hospitalised with a collapsed lung. Does anyone know how serious this is and how long will he need to be in hospital for? He's only 20 and he seemed fine when I saw him on Wednesday.

My friend had this )he fell! It was very painful i remember (although suitable pain killers given) and i think he was in hospital for a week. (He was fine in hospital, but I think they observe you for a bit)
Perhaps you could phone the hospital and speak to a ward nurse who could advise you further.

Bumping for you but it doesn't sound nice

I have had this happen several times. It is particularly common in young, thin men, and smokers.

The treatment depends on the size of the collapse, but can be just oxygen (if needed) and observation, or if hte collapse is larger then sometimes they need to put a tube into the chest to drain the air off. If it keeps happening then sometimes an operation is needed to fix the lung to the inside of the chest cavity.

More information about it here. Do hope he's better soon.
