Eyeball Pain

grumpygrumps · 30/10/2010 13:50

Behind my right eye, the eyeball is very painful. The pain increases with sunlight and also when I move my eyes in order to look around.
Touching the eyelid also gives off a sharp pain.

It sarted while on holiday and is now worsening, I can't get to my GP till monday any ideas until then? According to Google I am slowly going blind..

Whites of the eyes are looking a bit red too.

You can probably head to an opticians this weekend.

Probably better on the diagnostics side as well.

winnybella · 30/10/2010 14:21

It happened to me recently- it hurt behind my eyeball when I tried to move it around. It lasted a few days. I figured it must have been a result of to much reading/sitting in front of the computer. Seems like a muscle strain.

If you're worried, see a doctor.

winnybella · 30/10/2010 14:22

I don't think it was my eyeball that hurt, though- more like behind it iyswim.

EvilAllenPoe · 30/10/2010 14:24

straight to optician! they mostly do drop in appts - find one and call ahead!

GP doesn't have all the kit/ expertise in eye things and may just refer you to hospital opthalmologist.

Elibean · 30/10/2010 14:54

I had something very similar two weeks ago, in my case the GP thought it was a trapped nerve - which seemed to get better a couple of days later - then I erupted in shingles: across my forehead, scalp and left eyelid.

Yours sound more painful than mine though, mine was a dull pain - and I also had weird tingling nerve-y feelings on my head (and itching, thought I had nits for a while!!) and that side of my face.

Do go to the optician, if you can't get to the GP, they have more equipment than the doctor though less, obviously, than an eye hospital or opthalmologist.

grumpygrumps · 30/10/2010 14:59

I have just arrived back from a local optician and was told to see a GP and from there I may be referred back to them or a local hospital - a bit of a chicken and egg scenario but either way they didn't check my eye Sad
I was hoping to hear comments along the lines of 'oh it's probably just a virus'.

OP posts:
grumpygrumps · 30/10/2010 15:01

minus Shingles from that virus list please.

"but either way they didn't check my eye"

You had a eye examination and they didn't check your eye?

grumpygrumps · 30/10/2010 15:13

No, I nipped in randomly today and they decided I should first go to the doctor before checking my eye.

OP posts:
DBennett · 30/10/2010 15:18

I'm surprised by that decision.

But I guess it could be down to individual/regional differences.

grumpygrumps · 30/10/2010 15:30

Thanks Bennett I thought the same and your comment sent alarm bells ringing so I have just called Specsavers for a second opinion and they said I should make my way to a 24 hr hospital in Old St, London which I will do right now, thanks everyone.

I think it would have been better for them to say we'll see you but ok.

Hope all goes well at Moorfields.

grumpygrumps · 30/10/2010 23:47

Diagnosed as Uveitis in the end.
I now have steroid eyedrops and will have follow up blood tests (I have had terrible backache also).

Glad you got sorted.

A lot of the time no underlying cause is found but it's always worth getting the blood tests done.

Elibean · 31/10/2010 10:53

Well done for following it up, grumpygrumps - glad you have drops (and no shingles)!

foxinsocks · 31/10/2010 10:57

You did the right thing.

I had this a few weeks ago. Optician did an urgent report for the gp so I could get referred to the opthamologist urgently....

3 weeks and I'm still waiting for the referral ffs

Next time I'll go to the bloody eye casualty!

foxinsocks · 31/10/2010 11:02

(I mean I haven't even got the letter to get an appointment, I'll be lucky if I'm seen this year ffs)

Hope the blood tests go ok
