Every 3 weeks or so I will get a mouthful of the buggers. I went to the dentist he just said not a lot can be done, you're just unlucky Hmm

So wonderful, knowledgeable MN people do you have any idea why? I do not drastically change my diet every 3 weeks, I havent been run down maybe a little tired but that is about it.

  1. Do you chew or bite the inside of your mouth ( you may not be aware that your doing it especially when stressed or in deep thought).
  2. It could be a food alergy - maybe you should monitor what you it to see if it's a certin something setting it off.
  3. Hormones -women are more prone to mouth ulcers than men due to hormone changes. Woman are likely to develop mouth ulcers at the onset of a period, during pregnancy or after menopause - any of these fit?

If none of these answer the question i would suggest you see your doctor rather than a dentist as it could be a sympton of something larger.

I've always had lots of mouth ulcers, and just assumed I was a bit unlucky.

It seems that, whenever I get any sort of scratch in my mouth it becomes an ulcer.

Plus I get ulcers for no reason too.

I think it might be hormonal for me, as it got a lot better when I had DS, although it's beginning to get worse again.

Other things that helped me over the years were using Corsodyl mouthwash when I had a bad outbreak. It is pretty hideous, and I did get some staining on my teeth after a while.

The hygenist will be able to get any staining off though. And regular visits to the hygenist were the other thing that seemed to help me.

run down? try some zinc tabs for general boost, and salt mouthwash every day

tearinghairout · 26/10/2010 22:11

I go through phases of getting them too. I think mine is linked with diet - I start getting them if I don't eat many vegetables, so if I make an effort to eat more healthily I stop getting them.

When you get them, make sure you drink lots of water, which seems to help.

Salt and vinegar crisps and mouthwash seem to bring them on for me.

childrenofthecornsilk · 26/10/2010 22:18

I get them when I'm run down and tired.

I know a few people who swear by berroca (sp.?)

QueenOfFlamingEverything · 26/10/2010 22:23

I think there is a link with iron or B vitamin deficiency. I used to get dreadful mouth ulcers, but I take Floradix now and eat better food, and rarely get them.

SpeedyMackechnie · 26/10/2010 22:29

Change your toothpaste and go for one with no sodium laureth/laurel sulphate. I use sensodyne gentle whitening.

Helped me massively.

Hulababy · 26/10/2010 22:32

I get lots too, and never just one at a time - always lots. They are worse when I am ill, tired, stressed or just under the weather.

sonsmum · 27/10/2010 08:57

I also used to get them terribly. Was told it was linked to a Vit B complex defficiency.....try taking some Vit B tabs and see if it makes a difference.

Remembered some other things that seem to have helped me:

  • switching to an electric rather than manual toothbrush
  • using a soft toothbrush

Ooooh thank you ladies :) I eat relatively healthily (treat myself at the weekends) but will try the things you have suggested :) I currently have 7 of the buggers in my mouth and they are massive Sad have got the corsodyl and that seems to sort them for a little while.

Thank you again :)
