just got a letter from hosp it says that the xray i had last week shows something. It says a word that starts with op in right upper zone. What the heck does that mean?

Is it opaque? Something not clear - can't be seen through. Have you had a chest infection recently?

giraffesCantDookForApples · 23/10/2010 18:13

pic on profile of the word. Yes had chest infection

Looks like 'opacity' to me.

DBennett · 23/10/2010 18:31

Opacity.

As in something blocking the passage of the x-ray.

Lungs aren't really my thing but I understand that's how almost everything, from infection and inflammation up, looks on a x-ray.

When you go in for your follow up they'll be more tests and the drs. will look at the shape and size and get to the bottom of it.

P.S. It is an awesome in giraffe in St. Enochs Hamleys isn't it!

Opacity is mentioned link{http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:WcYrHuwBPD0J:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chest_radiograph+opacity+in+chest+xray&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk\here} under nodules if that helps at all.

Right that says 'opacity in right upper on film 13/10/10. For repeat. To attend around 20/11/10' So there is something showing up on the x-ray and they want you to have another in a month - to see what's happened to it. If you've had an infection then chances are it's the after effects of that and nothing to worry about. They don't let you wait a month if it looks dodgy! Smile

Cool thanks, got a bit freaked out when read letter, said I could phone GP if wanted to discuss but its Saturday! Have been having lots of chest pain.

My mother had the same thing after a chest infection....had a CT and it was perfectly clear. They are simply being thorough. They would give you an urgent follow-up if they were really concerned.
