Lump in Breast - anyone got any advice please?

on Saturday night I was in the bath reading an article about breast cancer. I decided to examin my & much to my horror, found a lump on my left breast, just above the nipple.

Monday teatime I went to my docs who examined me & identified the lump. She seems to think it's a cyst & has told me to take evening primrose oil for 2 weeks. 800mg a day. If it's not gone, then to go back & I'll be referred to the breast clinic.

Does this seem reasonable ? apparently cysts tend to be hormone related & I recently had a miscarriage. I'm 36.5 & thought I was in good health. There is no breast cancer in my maternal family & I breast feed my dd for 2 years.

hello again
just to say had a pretty fabulous time at hotel and we so needed it. slept like a baby the first night. went for drives on very wet dartmoor, and the sun came out when we went to the Eden Project - so inspirational.

lots happened with Herceptin last week (Elaine Barber in Staffordshire, and Northern Ireland) which is all good news, but did mean we weren't able to do the complete get away from it all we had hoped. I'm not sure that was a realistic goal anyway! My MP is now on the case too.

This weekend it was dd's 3rd birthday and we had a big party and all the family came, as well as her friends. It was fantastic to see everyone and really good for me to see them all as I start chemo tomorrow, and I needed the boost. It was all very hard work (another reason I'm pleased we only have one child.....ooooh that's a whole other thread, isn't it) but totally worth it.

Am approaching the first chemo session tentatively. There is something quite relentless about how the time keeps ticking away and the next hurdle presents itself, but at least when this one is out of the way, there are only 7 to go.

Good luck with the chemo Lalaa.

My mum just called to say her mammogram was clear which is fantastic news Now we just have to wait until march and then hopefully they'll be able to give a proper allclear and say she is in remission.

lalaa, sorry - I haven't seen your thread before. I want to send my best wishes for your chemo.
My SIL was diagnosed with breast cancer, grade3, i thnk, 4.5 years ago. She to had cells in lymph nodes, and had chemo and then radio. Her kids were 4 and 7. She too was told that her prognosis was poor.

She found the first few chemo sesions ok. A bit harder later on, but each time the ill feeling lasted about 2 days, I think. In between treatments, she felt ok. I am thinking of you, as she was without hair over christmas, that first year. And you know what? Once we had all seen her once, for the first 2 seconds, and got used to her diferent look, we really didn't notice it. She didn't bother to wear her wig for Xmas dinner.

And you know what? She had her full hesad of hair back by the next Xmas, she completed the Moonwalk marathon walk for Breast cancer this summer, and all her regular checks are showing that she is still clear.

I wish you very well indeed, Lalaa. May luck and everything else be on your side.

Hi - Fantastic uplifting message Blu. I do hear good news stories all the time, but your sister's situation seems very similar to mine, so it is good to hear that she is doing so well.

Done the chemo today. Just feeling a bit knackered so far. Long may it continue......I'll take fatigue over vomiting every day of the week. It's a bit early yet, so we'll see.

lalaa · 15/11/2005 16:21

Sorry - SIL, not sister.

Just wanted to wish you Good Thoughts for you Chemo Lalaa. Hopefully a good sign if you haven't been sick straight away. I didn't get sick at all (but carried on taking anti sickness all throughout) but did get very tired which is difficult with a young child so make sure you get plenty of rest.

Take Care
J

Hope you're still feeling un-sick, Lalaa - my pal said that Zofran was the best solution for nausea/vomiting: they don't offer it upfront because its expensive, but if you need it - yell loudly. You shouldn't have to put up with bad side effects on top of everything.

Glad Blu posted her SIL's story - I've heard many like it too, but a personal one is best!

Wishing you well...xxC

Feeling much much better now. Felt dreadfully sick until day 5, and then started gradully feeling better. I don't think I should feel that sick for that long so I'll talk to the oncologist about it when I get back. Have got the expensive anti-sick drug (and three others) but I know they can play around with the prescriptions, so we'll see.

It's so like morning sickness. Felt like death first thing in the morning and gradually improved - mid afternoon and evening were the best times. Now just got horrible metallic taste in my mouth all the time.

Am glad to have got the first one out of the way.

Blu · 21/11/2005 17:48

Lalaa, sorry, I 'lost' this thread, but have found it again.

So sorry that the chemo has been so unpleasant, and I hope they can adjust the anti-sickness drugs.

We all made a fuss each time my SIL had chemo - cards each time, we marked the half-way point, and my Mum made sure that she always had fresh scented flowers in her house - I think the scent helped with the odd tastes, etc - but I guess everyone has to find their own coping strategies. How is it affecting your family?

Thinking of you - and apologies for my bad Englilsh, spelling and grammar in my last post!

Elibean · 23/11/2005 19:46

Ack, five days is a long time - I'm sorry you felt so bad, Lalaa. And yes, I'd definitely see what they can do differently - there's usually something, from what I've been told.

Emailed my MP on the herceptin equal access issue...and just had a reply: she sounds very committed to pressurizing the gov. over it, and took my email seriously, which was good to see. I know its a teeny tiny drop in the ocean, but I wouldn't have done it if you hadn't mentioned it in another post....and if half the people who read your post contacted their MPs...well, thats a slightly bigger teeny tiny drop. Hope something comes of it one day soon.

Hope you keep feeling better, and have a good non-chemo week.

jambuttie · 23/11/2005 20:36

thinking of you laalaa hope you feel a bitty better soon

falalaala · 09/12/2005 14:09

back again
just done the 2nd round of chemo. feel a bit better than last time because oncologist increased the anti-nausea drugs. hooray. don't know yet whether i'll get herceptin, but the primary care trust hasn't said no outright - they've said that they'll look at it again closer to the date that I need it and asked to be kept up to date with my progress.
can't believe how many other women are being referred for lumps at the moment....

Redtartanlass · 09/12/2005 14:41

lalaa, glad you're sounding so upbeat. I've seen all the wonderful advice you've been giving to other threads. Good for you girl
