Lump in Breast - anyone got any advice please?

on Saturday night I was in the bath reading an article about breast cancer. I decided to examin my & much to my horror, found a lump on my left breast, just above the nipple.

Monday teatime I went to my docs who examined me & identified the lump. She seems to think it's a cyst & has told me to take evening primrose oil for 2 weeks. 800mg a day. If it's not gone, then to go back & I'll be referred to the breast clinic.

Does this seem reasonable ? apparently cysts tend to be hormone related & I recently had a miscarriage. I'm 36.5 & thought I was in good health. There is no breast cancer in my maternal family & I breast feed my dd for 2 years.

hello
thanks for your thoughts amanda1!
i have got breast cancer, as suspected, and I'm going to have a lumpectomy on 6 October. it's ductal, which is better than lobular I know, and it's grade 2, which is normal for a 2 cm lump. I'm feeling fairly relieved that the news wasn't worse and am just gearing up for a shopping trip tomorrow for lovely things to wear while I can't move my arm, and new night clothes for the stay in hospital - so a silver lining, and all that.....

Mojomummy · 21/09/2005 00:35

Hi, Lalaa, hope you are keeping well...

I had my check today & thankfully it appears to be a cyst. I had an ultrasound which showed as a black blob on the screen. I have to go back in 2 weeks.

Mojomuumy - was thinking about you yesterday, I'm sooo glad it's a cyst.

Lalaa - all the best for the 6th, will you tell us how you're getting on, on this thread or will you start another? My thoughts and deep, deep, best wishes go with you lalaa.

JAG123 · 21/09/2005 20:03

Mojomummy - I'm so glad that this was just a cyst i bet you are really relived.

Lalaa - I hope that all goes well for you on the 6th. You seem to be holding together well. Do you have any children (hope you don't mind me asking). Stay Strong J

lalaa · 21/09/2005 21:34

Hello again
Amanda1, I have changed my mail preferences now so you can CAT me if you still want to. So glad that your lump looks as if it's a cyst, Mojomummy. That's great news. I'm sure that if they had been really worried, you'd have had the whole lot (ultrasound, mammogram and a core biopsy) as I did, one after another. It absolutely amazes me how common this is and it is great that you don't have it!
I'm going to have radiotherapy after the lumpectomy, unless they find cancer cells in the lymph nodes, in which case, it'll be chemo first, I think.
Jag, I do have one dd. I've been posting here since I was 20 weeks pregnant, and she's now nearly 3. Am doing everything I possibly can to keep things as normal as possible for her.
If Mojomummy doesn't mind, I think I'll just keep posting here. Also, I was thinking that if anyone else gets the bad news in the meantime, they might get some comfort from this thread. I certainly have done already!

JAG123 · 22/09/2005 16:32

Lalaa I'm glad this thread is helping you. It's good to have somewhere to pour out all of your ups and downs. I also have a DD who was 8mths when i was diagnosed and although it was hard sometimes it was good to have a reason to 'keep normal'. It was because of her, DH & our families that kept me strong. I had a lot of support especially from DH & DM. The only thing was that on the times when i was down i didn't want to let them know, so i wish i had known about MN then. Again good luck for the 6th & i'm here if you need to chat or if you want to CAT me. Take Care J

Hiya Lalaa
Just a quick note to say good luck with the lumpectomy tomorrow. Will be thinking of you.

emmatom · 05/10/2005 13:33

Good luck from me too. I had a lumpectomy, thankfully my lump was benign. No one told me however that after the op your boob feels permanently sore/numb/tender around the op site.

I believe this is scar tissue and 4 years on it is still extremely tender, especially at certain times of the month. Could have been a lot worse though, so don't want to sound as though i'm complaining.

For other worried ladies - the current government guidelines are that with a breast lump, after referral by your GP (and you should insist for referral if you need to, mine was excellent) you should be seen at the hospital by the consultant within 2 weeks. The consultancy, biopsy and mammogram were all completed the same day and the op within a week.

amynnixmum · 05/10/2005 13:50

Good luck lalaa

My mum has just finished her treatment and she is doing well

PollyLogos · 05/10/2005 14:05

Lalaa I don't know if you'll see this now before you go in but I've just come across this thread and wanted to wish you all the best tomorrow.

Am I right in thinking that it was you and your dh and dd who spent 3 months on paxos a couple of years ago?? (and who I posted all the info on formula available in Greece?) I do hope everything goes smoothly. I think I also noticed some time ago that you now live in my neck of the woods (I'm in Bradford-on-Avon when in the UK)

Take care PollyLogos (ex GRMUM)

lalaa · 05/10/2005 18:27

hello everyone
thanks for the good luck messages. have just off loaded dd to my in-laws for the night (due to th early start tomorrow) and am about to attack my packing. want to get everything out of the way so that i can relax and go to bed early!
hello ex GRMUM - yes, it is me that went to paxos 2.5 years ago and your advice was fab. I didn't know that you are in Bradford on your home visits - I'm in one of the villages on the outskirts.....what a small world it is.
must get on with the packing now. will let you know how I get on - might be a little while until my arm sorts itself out.....

JAG123 · 05/10/2005 20:20

Wish you all the best with your op. J

lalaa · 11/10/2005 12:02

Hooray
Am home. All done. Bit uncomfortable and spaced out most of the time (the latter due to fab painkillers, I'm sure). Sleeping loads. Much more mobile than I thought I would be. Follow up appointment, when I find out whether the cancer spread to my lymph nodes, is next Tues (18th) which isn't long at all. All well at home - dh is coping brilliantly, although he has said that he needs a holiday! Lots and lots of people are being so supportive, which is lovely - I feel very lucky to have such good friends.

Redtartanlass · 11/10/2005 19:09

lalaa...lovely to hear from you as I've thinking of you. You sound so positive and upbeat I am so glad you've got loads of support from family and friends. How's your dd coping.
