thumb infection

Something stabbed under my thumb nail on Sunday which made it a bit sore. Now I have woken this morning and I think it's infected.
It's right at the corner of my nail and there was a small amount of pus. I've got rid of this by pulling nail up a bit and it bled a small amount.
Thumb is hot and swollen and very sore if I put any pressure on any part of it.
Is it possible for the infection to go on it's own or do I have to visit GP for antibiotics?
No other symptoms, no fever or anything.
I'm thinking I just keep it clean and keep an eye on it to make sure infection doesn't spread up my arm.

You do need to be careful about infections in the hand - they can spread and be difficult to treat.

I'd suggest seeing what it's like tomorrow. If it's getting better, you probably just could keep a close eye on it but definitely see your GP if it gets worse at any stage

Putting your arm in a sling with the hand raised (ie so it's across your chest and resting against your opposite collarbone) will help - you can take your hand out when you need to use it but keep it in the sling when you don't.

If in doubt, see your GP. You can't afford to lose a thumb!
