Rash on 3 year old that has now bruised...

Hi wondering if anyone has any experience of anything like this. Waiting on docs opening first thing to get her checked out but basically my 3 year old dd had a rash appear on her arms and under her arms and a little on her back yesterday.

It wasn't your typical viral type rash, definitely not chicken pox. It was round patches, like seperate lumps but not bites. They were very red to start with but as they faded they have left bruising in the shape of the spot/patch if that makes sense.

It's got me quite worried as it was unlike anything I've seen before. At first I though it may be hives but don't think that would leave her with bruises? They have faded quite a bit now so hoping there is something to show doc in the morning.

I sent dp down to the chemist and the pharmacist gave her piriton syrup so she has had a couple of doses of that since yesterday.

Anyone had a rash that has left bruising?

Probably worrying about nothing as it's going away but can't help it!

i would ring NHS and ask them

phipps · 17/10/2010 19:56

Could you post a photo?

phipps · 17/10/2010 19:57

Does the rash go white when you press on it?

Hulababy · 17/10/2010 19:58

Did you do the glass test?

TBH with a purple bruise type rash I would say A&E

AnakisT · 17/10/2010 19:59

Any other symptoms? Temp?

TheGrumpalo · 17/10/2010 20:00

Never though to take a photo, she's in bed now. Wish I had! She isn't unwell in any other way other than the rash and a cough she's had for a while.

Just going to have another look...

No temp or anything, she's sleeping now.

It did fade when pressed before (with a glass too) but now the bruising doesn't but the round spot in the middle does.

As a mother who DS was in hospital for a weekend with suspected meningtitis I would just call NHS direct now. Not worth the risk.

phipps · 17/10/2010 20:07

You need to call for advice.

Frrrrightattendant · 17/10/2010 20:52

Sounds really strange, I wouldn't panic unless she is unwell, which you say she isn't. I was going to say it might be ringworm due to the pattern but that wouldn't bruise...curiouser and curiouser!

I'd take her tomorrow, obv keep an eye in case she becomes unwell but it doesn't sound too dodgy if she is fine.

Dansmommy · 17/10/2010 20:58

The 'bruising' would make me go to A+E right now, tbh. Too many meningitis horror stories not to.

Sorry to be alarmist, I'm just saying how I would react.

countrybump · 17/10/2010 21:04

Scarlett fever? Doesn't always have a high temp with it, but would have a sore throat?

TheGrumpalo · 17/10/2010 22:27

Thanks everyone for replying. Sorry I haven't updated sooner but I phoned out of hours doctor and he couldn't reassure me without seeing her so just back from the hospital and it was an allergic reaction.

He's not sure about the bruising, says it could be where she was scratching the spots but I've to keep an eye on her and if she gets any more bruising at all she has to get a blood test done.

Think i'll see gp and see if he'll do one anyway. Not happy with the bruising even if it was from her scratching.

Glad I went now, felt a bit daft as the bruises had faded a lot even in the few hours she was in bed but it's better to be safe than sorry. Dd was a bit confused as to why mummy let her out in her slippers Grin

I hope you are seen today and it isn't anything more serious.

TheGrumpalo · 18/10/2010 18:19

Thanks phipps, the soonest appointment I could get was for Thursday to see about the blood test. He said only to get it if there were more bruises but i'm not happy with that so going to make sure they take one then. She's been fine today, happy, eating well been to nursery and the rash is more or less gone apart from the bruising.
