Do I have to get anti-biotics for a urine infection?

Or will it just get better eventually?

I've self diagnosed a urine infection: aching bladder, urge to wee, tiny bit of stinging. But I'm not ill with it or anything.

I don't have time to go to the doctor.

So if I ignore it will it go away?

Mine never go away without ab's. But mine always progress from the stage you describe to real pain, temperature and blood in my urine within about 5 hours. Always go to the docs.

Get some cystitis treatment from your chemist, cystopurin or something i think its called. Make sure you complete the course and drink lots of water and cranberry juice.

If after all that it doesn't go away you must see your g.p because it could lead to kidney infection which is really serious.

Hope this helps

you could try drinking loads of fluids ,see if that helps.
In hospital a uti is only treated if patient has symptoms
yours are quite mild so you could wait and see

Definitely go and see your GP, I had this for the first time a couple of weeks ago, self diagnosed, took over counter medication. It got bad very very quickly, I ended up off work for a week.

I never realised that a water infection could be so horrible.

KurriKurri · 07/10/2010 14:39

Go and get your urine tested by the GP and let them decide. You can get those symptoms with something causing irritation rather than an actual infection. But if you do have an infection, get it sorted with AB's or you could become quite unwell.

I wouldn't risk it personally. I had what I thought was a mild UTI last year, and it quickly became a kidney infection. I started with symptoms monday, and am now taking antibiotics (which incidentally have turned my urine luminous yello. Hours of fun!).

seashore · 07/10/2010 14:43

yep, you need antibiotics and drink loads of water.

ppeatfruit · 07/10/2010 15:07

You could try the t tree treatment, get a fresh bottle and put some on 3 times a day (it doesn't hurt) it's the only essential oil that can be used on mucous membranes THI! Some women put it on a tampon and insert. It's a natural A.B.

Oh bugger. Suppose I'll have to find time to go to the doc.

It's a complete PITA trying to get an appointment at our surgery. It's one of those where you have to ring at 8.30, it's engaged for half an hour, you get through at 9.00 and all the appointments have gone. grrrr.

Thanks for advice, it's actually getting quite uncomfortable now - I can feel my bladder bumping with every footstep! (that's interesting for you isn't it? Smile)

Could you get to see a nurse more easily? or go to a drop in centre? Take urine sample with you in a small container.

AnitaBush · 07/10/2010 16:18

Does a urine sample not have to be in a special stirilised pot?

No I think anything clean will do - I mean those cardboard box things they give you to wee in in hospital aren't sterile are they Grin

AnitaBush · 07/10/2010 17:51

Good point!

get the antibiotics, urine infections can progress really fast so don't risk it,I used to get this a lot but now I take a cranberry tablet every day and never had it since, you can get them at a health shop.
