Does anyone take Microgynon and an anti-depressant?

I've gone back on Microgynon to help with PMT which was taking over my life. It's better but I'm feeling tearful, low and moody for quite a lot of the time. I saw an article in the paper which said that low doses of Prozac taken on days you're affected seemed to work well and I went to see my Doctor about it. They were very resistant and said it had to be either/or.

I'm really struggling at the moment and I'm wondering whether to go back and see a different Doctor. Does anyone have any experience of this?

I'm a bit unclear from your post - is the Microgynon causing the low mood? I was incredibly weepy when I was on it, had to come off in the end. In which case it might be worth tryign another pill, a different one might agree with you more & not cause low moods.

That's funny - I felt really, really low when on Microgynon (knackered and miserable all the time) - much better since I changed to a different pill.

Do you think you could try a different pill or would that not help with the PMT?

I was really weepy when I was on Microgynon too. I would insist on a different pill if I were you.

Crumbs, I didn't think Microgynon could actually be causing it! I was on it pre-children and in between births with no adverse effects but came off it when DH had the snip. I then suffered PMT for at least 2 weeks per cycle, so the Doctor suggested going back on it to help regulate periods/hormones I assume (other choice was anti-depressants which I resisted). I would really like to stay on the pill because I like knowing exactly where I am in my cycle (and therefore what is probably causing my low mood) but I'm increasingly feeling that it's not enough IYKWIM?

I know a couple of people (as well as myself) who had low moods on Microgynon. I think even though you've had it before with no problems, things will have changed & it could be causing your low moods now. There are lots of other types of pill (I went onto Ovranette after Microgynon, a friend went onto Celeste) that you could try, just to rule it out before antidepressants. If your GP is not supportive about it go to a family planning clinic.
