Help! I've got Dog Breath!

CDMforever · 03/10/2010 14:22

I'm just getting over a throat sinussy type virus which I had for about 4 days and have now realised my breath smells awful. My saliva tastes awful too.
During the virus the top right hand row of my teeth really ached so I wonder if the bad breath is linked to a dental problem rather than the virus.
DH got me a mouth wash which I initially thought had solved the problem but within 20 minutes of using it the halitosis was back!
I'm going to make an appointment with the dentist asap.
Does anyone else have experience of bad breath during/after a virus?
I feel so self conscious. It isn't helped by DH repeated saying "Let's have a smell....ugh, its still there!"

It could be dental or equally it could be your throat or sinuses.
Google 'tonsil stones'.
I think it's likely to be connected with your virus as it has come on suddenly.

CDMforever · 03/10/2010 15:33

Thanx framey will look into it.

I had sinusitus before and I ended up at the dentist thinking I had problems. It wasn't, the nerves to your teeth can get aggravated by sinus problems.
I would go to the docs, make sure you haven't got an infection.

Bunbaker · 03/10/2010 15:36

It could be catarrh or you may have a sinus infection. DD often has foul breath after a cold because of the residual catarrh.

Riponite · 03/10/2010 15:38

Try gargling with the mouthwash? Might be something nasty growing in your throat? You could ask your pharmacist whether they think it's more likely to be a doctor problem or a dentist problem. Our pharmacist is very useful and they go through very comprehensive training.

RageAgainstTheTeen · 03/10/2010 15:57

Agree with possibility of sinusitis

Makes my breath rancid due to the infection

CDMforever · 03/10/2010 17:18

Thanx all.
Looked into tonsil stones Framey and I do have one of these specimens in my mouth, have had for ages actually, thought it was just a recurring ulcer.
My doctor insisted it was viral and not an infection so didn't prescribe anti-biotics. Wonder if it developed into an infection....or he was being stingy?!

I had this too - it was gross but once I was really fully over the whole thing it went.

I hope.

FrameyMcFrame · 03/10/2010 19:00

Get thee to the GPs on Monday, if he/she catches a whiff of your icky breath he may be more likely to take it seriously Grin :)

CDMforever · 03/10/2010 19:15

LOL Framey! I will make sure I breath very heavily all over him! Will make an appt forthwith! Going back to look at Tonsil Stones. I'm intrigued.....you should be a GP Framey!

Crikey oh Riley, have just seen an unshaven male removing a tonsil stone on utube. Most unpleasant! Now know my ailment is not tonsil stones, No! as they seem to be very hard and, er, stone-like. My growth is very soft.
Curiouser and curiouser..........

OP posts:
riojaguzzler · 03/10/2010 20:16

Have you had a lot of tonsillitis in the past? It could be that you have scarred tonsils and the growth is food stuck in the holes! Gross, I know!! If you gargle with some salty water it should come out....

FrameyMcFrame · 03/10/2010 20:28

oh dear, gross!!

Have you had tonsillitis before?
If you have little poc marks or indentations on your tonsils from tonsillitus food debris can get stuck and go a bit off and become infected. Not necessarily tonsil stones as such but could it be causing the smell?
It could be a sinus infection too though.

The mystery of the Dog Breath continues...

FrameyMcFrame · 03/10/2010 20:30

Cross post rioja, great minds etc!

riojaguzzler · 03/10/2010 20:33

Indeed! Great minds, hidious tonsils (if yours are anything like mine!!)

CDMforever · 03/10/2010 22:16

Indeed I have had tonsilitis rather alot.... I wonder what food my poc marks are harbouring?? DH said my breath smelt like actual dog poo, though I can honestly say I don't recall ever having eaten any.
(Just watched Downton Abbey...)
The mystery of the Dog Breath continues though I do so hope it is solved by Thursday as I'm spending the day with a colleague who is terribly posh and who I don't know well enough to explain my canine aura. Maybe I will gorge myself on strong mints the night before and hope for the best. Or just remain mute all day...
Off to bed now. Hope I don't have nightmares involving tonsil stone removal or rotting food in my throat. Nite nite.
PS Having dog breath does have its upsides. DH seems a lot less frisky today...

IF your friend is that posh the scent of dog breath and horse sweat will be perfume to her. Tally ho!

CDMforever · 04/10/2010 20:24

Nah, she's not THAT posh.
But the good news is I went to the pharmacist today (couldn't get an appt with GP or Dentist!) and she said that its definitely due to the virus and if its not gone in a week to go to the dentist.
Saw a close friend today and told her of my "personal problem".
I asked her if she had noticed what it was....she thought I was referring to a lady-part problem and how on earth would she notice that when I was fully clothed?! Anyway the point is she didn't think I had dog breath. I kept insisting she be completely honest with me, but she still said she couldn't smell anything rank.
I do think the DB is ebbing away a little bit. I shall miss it in some ways. Its become a real focus these past few days...

Grin at missing Dog Breath!

Could it be that you just have a horrid taste in your mouth and that it's not something that others can smell?

You can get a thrush type thing in the mouth that causes a nasty taste, have you got a white coating on your tongue?

CDMforever · 04/10/2010 21:17

You are an exceptionally good investagative pseudo-medical sleuth Framey (the best one I've ever met anyway).
WARNING!!! This is going to get yucky. Ready? Ok. I think its actually my snot that smells of dog. I've said it.
Trying to look at my tongue as I write this. Can't be arsed to get out of chair (one of those days) and I don't think its got a white coating.
I've been doing some reading and think I might actually have sinusitis (have I already told you this? I'm becoming obsessed....). My cheeks are really painful, my snot is yellowy green and, er, stinks and I'm very bunged up. Shame I can't go and get some anti-biotics now isn't it?!

OP posts:
FrameyMcFrame · 05/10/2010 11:41

Ah so Sinusitis it is then!

Glad we got to the bottom of that Grin

CDMforever · 05/10/2010 21:14

Me too Framey. And - its official - the Dog Breath is no more. RIP DB....:(
Thanx for all your sterling work. I know who to ask come the next minor medical disaster.

OP posts:
FrameyMcFrame · 05/10/2010 21:55

All in a days work! Grin
