What is it about Night Nurse?

I saw a big kerfuffle in Boots this afternoon with a young lad shouting at the dispensing assistant because she didn't want to sell him Night Nurse for his mum.
The chemist came over and said "you're not getting it, end of."

When I went outside he was with this lady who was shouting at him for not getting it.
Why couldn't she get it?!

I'm amazed you can still get the stuff. I've only taken it once when I was ill as a student and I slept for 24 hours straight. Could have done with some in January when I had proper flu.

kirinm · 23/03/2015 19:37

I've just used it through a bout of flu and it did help me sleep for the 36 hours I apparently needed.

I'll 'fess up. I used it in my insomnia days and I know quite a few other people who did too. It's much better than nytol which made me feel weird the next day.

It contains promethiazine which is very sedative. That and the combination of other things in it does knock you out.

I keep some for if I've a cold and I'm working. I work nights so I would take it in the day so I get a good sleep if I'm ill. It works wonders.

i,m in recovery from the addiction of alcohol and NN gives the feeling of drinking without getting wasted, however i know i am still not clean or in proper recovery but i am trying my hardest to get of NN...i feel as though its not as bad as alcohol but i always lie to myself...godbless u all xx..i just enjoy any feeling other than normality

WendyTorrance · 10/07/2015 18:49

I've only ever taken it in tablet form when I've had a bad cold and it's guaranteed to make me sleep through the night. I haven't tried the liquid form but I might now Grin

Took it once and have never dared again.

It was lunchtime the next day before I could really function effectively Shock

I know this is old but I wanted to share a point. I'm a young man living in an urban community. I can tell you that if a pharmacist decides not to sell someone a product such as night nurse they are in the right and have full backing of the law. Night nurse contains an ingredient called dextromarphoman and this is an extremely potent drug that causes a sort of high. It's very dangerous when over dosed and can cause serious health risks if not death if used in abundance. If you have ever heard of cough syrup or lean that American rappers usually talk about in music then you get my point. This and codien are very dangerous chemicals that like weed alcohol m.e are very bad when used in excess. I believe that's why the young man was not sold this item. Because I personally even know being 21 still don't get served night nurse at times even after my ID is showing.

I took NN tablets last week for 4 nights as I had a cold. I had the best sleeps ever!

I am totally going to get them for my next long haul flight.

LocalEditorEssex · 22/11/2015 18:24

I have only used it once or twice and both times took half the dosage....excellent stuff.

Frankel1 · 22/11/2015 18:30

I took it once and the next morning I drove my ds to school. I shouldn't have been behind the wheel as I was a zombie. I've never taken it since.
I recommend a cough syrup called Pulmo Bailly as although it makes you sleepy it is short lasting - and it's very effective for coughs and sore throats.

shutupandshop · 22/11/2015 18:57

It makes me feel better but doesnt knock me outConfused

itsmeohlord · 22/11/2015 18:59

We swear by it in this house - really works, as does Day Nurse.

Night nurse is good stuff. Always helps you sleep with a bad cold, it's got an old school antihistamine in it - promethazine this makes you drowsy and also dries up a runny nose which helps you sleep aha. The dextromethorphan helps suppress a cough too, It's not that strong alcohol wise and isn't usually addictive but is still only meant for short term use probably because you can gain tolerance. Same as other sleep aids like ones with diphenhydramine, just drowsy antihistamines really...

I think its fantastic stuff.
Its best taken when you are absolutely on your knees ill. Too powerful.for a cold but good for proper flu. Why do you want to be awake with shivers and chills and unable ro stand up anyway....thats when nightnurse is at its best. Knocks you into a nice little sleep and time away from feeling dire.
