Antibiotics - wwyd?

I had tonsillitis last weekend. Dr prescribed antibiotics on Monday and I got better. But I think I had bad side effects from the antibiotics. I had a constant really bad migraine/headache, nausea and also bloodshot eyes.

I rang surgery on Friday because I didn't want to waste an appointment and explained what had happened and that I was planning to stop taking them before the end of the course. The receptionist said dr would ring back after surgery if necessary - he didn't.

This morning, sore throat is back. Its nowhere near as bad as before but I really don't want it to come back, so would you:

(a) restart antibiotics
(c) wait and see and go back to doctors and ask for different antibiotics on Monday if it does get worse today?

I'd wait until tomorrow. May well not be the correct advice though!

I think you need to see the GP.

Stopping antibiotics before you've taken the full course us usually a Very Bad Thing (a major factor in bacteria becoming resistant).

Your case is a bit different, as you had suspected side effects. These need to be discussed with a doctor so you know properly what is going on. If a different antibiotic is required, s/he can prescribe one.

You could phone a pharmacist or see one today- Boots are open Sundays.

A lot of people don't know, but pharmacists are more qualified than drs when it come to the effects of drugs, so if you can talk to/see one it can be a great help.

This should have been yur first action when you had side effects.

See your Gp but also think about seeing a pharm. meanwhile.

Try gargling with warm salty water.
Dont swallow it

Thanks for the advice. Think I will try boots today. Am kicking myself for stopping now, I never would normally but I was so sure it was giving me the bad headaches and I couldn't take any more time off work.

You should never stop taking them before they're finsihed. The side effects wont kill you! This is why antibitotics are becoming resistent as people don't take them correctly.

Flighttattendant · 28/09/2010 16:06

A1980, I disagree - side effects CAN kill you.

I hope you are feeling OK, OP. I think different AB's might be the answer.

Flighttattendant · 28/09/2010 16:07

and they are also becoming resistant due to being vastly overprescribed.
