vaccinations before farm visit

A friend of mine mentioned that a baby should have their vaccinations before they visit a farm / petting zoo. Is this true? Why? DS has had the first 5-in-1 but not the 2nd or 3rd one. Should he avoid farms until he's had them?

god knows. ridiculous.
if you are planning on giving him unpasteurised cows milk to drink you may want to give him a bcg first though!!
oh, and make sure he doesnt climb any barbed wire fences without his full tetanus

Well, funny enough he had the bcg before leaving the hospital.

I think this has something to do with a disease carried by sheep, but I can't remember. I know there are signs at the farm warning pregnant women to stay away from the sheep... but I can't recall why.

never heard of that but I guess the tetanus part makes sense - and careful handwashing should sort out the rest, not that a baby is really going to get all that mucky!!

madmarchhare · 05/09/2005 14:55

Im not an authority but I cant see why. Its not as though your going to throw your baby in to have a good roll around with the goats is it?

Seriously though, it would say at the farm if it was a problem, like it does with pregnant women. I was at a farm over the weekend and didne see anything at all.

What about babies that live on farms? I have relations who live on a farm and have a young baby, the baby won't be in actual contact with the animals i.e touching them so I wouldn't worry too much.

uwila · 05/09/2005 15:41

Okay,I just thought maybe I had missed something. But if no one else has heard of this either I'm not going to worry about it. We're off to the the farm then.

they tell you to stay away from sheep when pregant because of toxoplasmosis, a bacteria that sheep carry that is very harmful to the unborn baby. There is no vaccine for it. If baby was up and running i would recomment that he stays away from animal poo without a tetanus jab, but nothing else that i can think of.
