Anyone had a gastric ulcer that bled?

A really scarey thing happened to me yesterday, I had a foul taste in my mouth and felt the urge to vomit, what came out was pure fresh blood. I went to casuaulty and, after six hours they said because my blood results where fine and I wasnt bleeding from elsewhere, I must have an ulcer. I take lots of painkillers for another problem and they reckon thats what caused the bleed.

Im terried because they did no other investigations so how can they know the source?

Im travelling tomorrow as well.

thats ridiculous....you shouldnt have been sent home until the source was found. How much blood was there?

It was while I was brushing my teeth, the brush made me gag and what came out was bright red fresh blood, I nearly fainted, it looked like alot to me, I had a foul taste in my mougth the day before so I can only guess that was the start of it. It wasnt coming from my mouth but there was no food in it (having said that, i have being dieting) I waited 6 hours for some boy like doctor to send me home with gastric tablets I couldve bought from boots. How can tablets stop you from bleeding?

Im really nervous to get on that plane tomorrow, its put me off but I cant miss my holiday.

I just think if I was bleeding alot internally I would know about it by now!!

the tablets cant stop you bleeding if it is a perforated ulcer . Was it omeprazole they gave you.I wouldnt be going on holiday if it was bad.....but i guess thats your decision. Like herbie said...you need to let your insurance company know otherwise you will not be covered.

It is omeprazole. Its not a diagnosis though is it? Im confused over the insurance thing, I have an ongoing one with my bank and I rang them last week and they said that I dont even have to tell them when Im going away!! Its weird not having a policy but, its my bank card apparently,

If it was still bleeding I would have brought more up wouldnt I? I wont be drinking thats for sure!!!

The will send me an appointment in two weeks time.

omeprazole is used to help treat ulcers and gastritis......heartburn..

Taken this off the data sheet....... Treating and preventing repeat cases of those
ulcers caused by taking a non-steroidal antiinflammatory
drug (NSAID) such as aspirin,
ibuprofen or diclofenac
? Relieving and preventing repeat cases of heartburn
(reflux oesophagitis) where acid has escaped from
the stomach into the gullet.

If you were bleeding alot i am sure they would have kept you in. My friend had a perforated ulcer and she lost 2 pints of blood and was in hospital for 7 days and a blood transfusion.

No you dont have to tell them when you are going away.....neither do i and i have got an annual policy. But if you have seen a doctor or been to a hospital in the last 6 months you need to tell them what for incase it recurrs on holiday. If not you probably wont be covered on your insurance. I would check your small print...better safe than sorry. I had to pay a small surcharge but i would rather have the cover and know i dont have to pay.

well, Im back in one piece. Its weird as I havent had any ulcer like pains. It happened once on holiday but a much smaller amount and it was a day after I had missed a dose on Omeprazole (bought it whilst I was there) I dont know if thats relevant.

I have to ring gp this week. Its strange as I feel fine.
