Statutory Sick Pay

Dont know if this is the right place for my enquiry but I am unwell and not been off sick before.

I had an operation for carpel tunnel two weeks ago. My employer said they will pay me sick pay for 4 weeks but I expect to be off for 6 -8 weeks. Can anyone advise me what I do about the weeks I will not be covered?

do they have a policy in place for how long they pay sick pay for? Most organisations will have a certain amount of time that they will pay you full pay before they put you onto SSP. As far as I am aware SSP should be paid for up to 28 weeks so perhaps they mean they will pay you your normal pay for 4, and then SSP (about £79 per week) after this. Ask them for it in writing and check the directgov website for up to date advice.

Hi HarrogateMum, I work 15hrs a week. They have said that they pay one weeks SP for every year worked. I have been there for 3.6yrs and they are paying me for 4 weeks.

I did wonder should I use up the rest of my holiday entitlement which would cover 2 of the remaining weeks.

well that will be their policy in terms of when they pay you full pay I imagine. They HAVE to pay you SSP after this so I suggest you mention it to them. If they look bewildered direct them to the government website!

Thanks for the info. I have been off 17 days now so ought to get it sorted. I think I will check out the directgov site over the weekend before contacting my head office on monday.
