Swelling/lump in armpit - calming advice please

Hi

I've got a GP appt later this afternoon as I would like to get my armpit checked.

A few days ago I had a bit of tenderness in my right armpit, so gave it a little prod and noticed a slight swelling. It's hard to describe exactly, but it's like a soft ridge and near the surface. It's not painful although I've made it sore from constant prodding.

I'm a total hyperchondriac and already thinking the worst btw.

I have a six month old baby and wondered if it could be hormonal.

I have a small cyst on my other armpit which has been there several years and I had that checked out at the time I discovered it.

The new 'thing' couldn't really be described as a lump and I'm a bit worried my GP might struggle to find it at all, but it's def there and causing me to be anxious.

Please give me some words of wisdom!

Only reassurance is that I had an armpit lump last year and it was nothing at all

They did send me for a scan but it turned out to just be a fatty deposit Hmm that went after about 6 weeks
they will find it tho- they are used to feeling for things

Hope it is ok

Thanks DTG

Glad all was well with you.

Whatever it is it's soft, but not really a definite lump.

I'll be a nervous wreck til I've been to GP. And I'll have to drag my two DDs along too!

Fingers crossed for you this afternoon. I've got a hard armpit lump and the GP referred me. My GP said most lumps are fatty deposits, hope yours is something like that.

MarkStretch · 14/09/2010 13:26

I had one.

Mine was really sore but Dr said nothing to worry about, probably an ingrown hair from shaving or something. Went after a few weeks.

Hope yours is the same!

Thanks for your kind words.

The one I have on the other side is hard-ish, pea sized etc.. but have had that one years and it's never changed.

This one is more flat, soft (like a swelling rather than a lump).

Will post later with outcome of GP visit!

messy - I had very similar - I too worried that GP might not be able to find it - but she did. she was very reassuring - said she was certain it was a "fatty deposit" but she wanted to be have it all confirmed properly so sent me for a check up at hospital - they prodded and scanned and agreed with her. the staff at the hospital were completely brilliant. calm and happy in the face of under-staffing. hope your appointment goes ok - it's terrifying I know - but a lot more common than you realise...as soon as you mention it people will say they've had similar - the vast majority of lumps are harmless.

Reporting back after GP visit.

She said it's nothing sinister, most probably a sebaceous cyst.

No further action unless it changes in any way.

Thanks for your advice earlier!
