Despairing. Been threated with 3 different antibiotics in last 4 wks for suspected UTI but symptoms have never improved (urine cultures were always negative) - terrible burning after weeing and feeling very inflamed in whole area. Had swabs taken yesterday but have to wait 1 wk for results, in meantime, being treated with yet another AB for Bacterial Vaginosis - but there's no itching, discharge or bad smell, just terrible burning/stinging sensation inside, all the time, and shooting pains in lower abdomen. Any ideas?

an allergy ?? did you change washing product ? I feel for you, it must be really hard !

fishingfilly · 14/09/2010 12:13

wow sounds very, very painful poor you.

Gosh its always the case when they say "all clear, nothign detected" it makes you feel as if you are imagining it but you know something isnt right.

Something def not right esp if AB not shifted it...ask to be referred to a gyno immediately

Burning/stinging on peeing - could it be cystitis? Drinking dilute squash with a teaspoon of bicarb in will help if it is.

3littlefrogs · 14/09/2010 18:38

How old are you? (I am thinking perimenopausal).

Beautifullettuce · 14/09/2010 19:03

Thanks ladies - I'm 32. Logically you would think thrush was involved given no. of ABs I've been on but I don't have any of the typical symptoms - can you just experience soreness without itching and discharge? In meantime am taking probiotics and taking care bathing, wearing cotton undies etc. so fed up of the discomfort!

It could be hormonal if everything else is negative. You could ask for some oestrogen cream and see if that makes any difference.

The worst soreness I have ever experienced was at the start of the menopause. It was far worse than thrush. I can remember being up half the night crying with the burning and itching. Awful.

Flighttattendant · 14/09/2010 19:10

You can definitely experience thrush in this way - please don't panic. Stop the antibiotics. They will just make it worse. Negative for cultures means you don't have a UTI so they are pointless anyway Smile

Get an oral clotrimazole or canesten tablet, or suppository or some cream. I would put money on it being thrush.

3littlefrogs · 14/09/2010 19:40

Yes - you can have thrush without any sign of discharge. I think it is worse that way TBH.

Sounds like cystitis. Could you try drinking a few large glasses of cranberry juice for a few days? There's a compound in cranberries which stops infection sticking to the bladder wall.

Alternatively, you could try dipping a tampon (or similar) into natural yoghurt and inserting it for a few hours, to see if it helps.

Hope you get better and take care.

Well, went back to GP this morning after another sleepless night and have been referred to a gynae/urologist. Thanks for all your advice.

I remember having problems with the scented panty liners and soaps. I was washing myself with the usual shower gel and it started causing so much pain but not inside the vagina. Evrything was burning. I now use Femfresh or other feminine "soaps".

Could be a cystitis as other suggest. Hopefully, the specialist can help you.

Such a long shot but did you find out what it was?

This was 12 years ago, she's probably forgotten Grin
