Do little black moles just appear or are babies born with them?

May seem like a strange question but my little girl(12 weeks) suddenly has a little black spot on her cheek that wasn't there yesterday. There is no scab, it is under her skin.

Am slightly paranoid because my son suddenly developed a red spot on his scalp when he was a few weeks old which turned into a large strawberry mark (fortunately now covered by his hair).

Does anyone have any experience of black freckles moles suddenly appearing? She is mixed race but fair skinned so am hoping its just melanin?

Hmmmm, not sure! They certainly do appear as you get older (I'm quite a moley type person) and both my girls have dark freckles/moles on their faces which weren't there the day they were born, but I couldn't pinpoint exactly when they appeared.

Ask your health visitor next time you see him/her?

DD has 2 moles that have appeared since birth - one on her thigh that appeared at a few months old and one on her back that appeared a few weeks ago (she's just turned 2). I'm not worried about them as they're tiny and not irregular shapes or different colours but if you're bothered then ask the GP/HV next time you see them.

Thanks for your responses. Fingers crossed they're just moles

They do appear and can do so for years and years, into early adulthood really and sometimes beyond. They can also appear in pregnancy.

I wouldn't worry. It is probably just a small mole or freckle.
