URGENT advice needed re cut thumb

AddictedToRadley · 03/09/2010 18:08

My DH has cut his thumb when preparing carrots but won't stop bleeding (alot). It's been over an hour now and it's still bleeding alot. We've put a massive tight bandage on it but it's bled through at least 5 layers of the bandage.
Does he need to go to A&E or out of hours GP?
Thanks

LOL
What do you think? A&E or OOH GP?

He possibly does need a stitch put in, tbh. A GP won't stitch it, I shouldn't think. Take him to A&E - sorry!

Put an ice cube in a teatowel an prss it onto the cut.

Use a plaster to hold the sides of the wound together.

Give the carrots a good rinse!

Def A&E. I sliced my finger a few years ago. I have a scar now and no feeling in it.

Dione · 03/09/2010 18:19

Go to A&E now. The bleeding is too heavy and probably needs stitched. Go now before the alcohol induced injuries start streaming in.

Back from A&E. DH had it dressed with a pressure dressing as it was still pouring with blood. He couldn't have it stitched, glued or steri-stripped as the wound was too big. He sliced the side and top of his thumb off rather than cut it open. Thank you all for your advice. It definitely was a case for A&E rather than OOH GP.

TheButterflyEffect yes my DH was going to glue it himself but we had not superglue in the house. He's ex Royal Marines and has done things like that before. Last time he superglued a 4" gash on his arm and previous to that he pulled a pin from his thumb (surgical pin that holds broken bones together) with a pair of pliers because it was 'annoying' him!! Thankfully his thumb had healed. He's getting better at going to drs rather than 'self treating'.

Oh god I feel light-headed reading that!
Glad its all sorted now...but seriously, the pin thing? Thats just not right Grin

AddictedToRadley · 04/09/2010 02:09

Sorry about making you feel light headed! Yes, I thought it was pretty gross and bloody stupid but that's typical of Marines!! Until he sees his own bloody then he looks like he's going to pass out!!

Oops should say own blood not own bloody!! Can you tell it's the early hours?!?! Grin
