About my mother, how do you get a second opinion from another hospital?

Do I have to wait to get her discharged? Do I need to look for a specialist orthopedic centre? Does anyone know one?

She needs a hip reconstruction and I have found this place

www.rnoh.nhs.uk/clinical-services/joint-reconstruction/hip

We'd like to get her moved out of her current hell -hole hospital, we just don't know how to do it. It appears they have been overloading her with fluid in an attempt to cure her dehydration, this isn't good for patients in mild heart failure.

There's one in Birmingham which is closer to her home. My sister's been visiting her in hospital 3 times a week since June, she's loosing the will to live now Sad

Thank you Smile

How did the meeting go today, Belle?

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 01/09/2010 20:25

Haaaa! Says it all really. They have put the fear of god into her regarding an operation, when they asked her she said she didn't know. They are going to sort out her pain medication and transfer her to the local hospital that's a bit like a big care home. Hmm They won't refer her as she 'doesn't know'(bashes head against a wall)

Thankyou for remembering and asking.

Sorry to hear that.

Feenie · 01/09/2010 20:36

Ofgs. Is there a chance that when her pain is under control you and your sister could talk her round?

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 01/09/2010 21:10

I think that we may be able to once she's home, she's been in hospital for 3 months, she's very bored as there's nothing for her to do so I imagine she's become institutionalised by now Sad When she's home she'll be in her own surroundings with pictures of her grandchildren all around her, I'm hoping that this will help. My poor sister's so pissed off now, it's really, really frustrating. She's a lovely mother, really caring and worries about all of us (even though most of us are now parents), she can't make decisions for herself sometimes though.

all patients are entitled to a second opinion. Has a different orthopaedic surgeon where she is now had a look at her? Being that she's in hospital, it would be very difficult to get an external consultant to come and give an opinion. The only sure fire way is getting her out of the hospital and taking her straight to another A&E at a hospital with an orthopaedic dept. I'm sure you have but have you asked the consultant she's under now to make a referral to the rnoh?

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 01/09/2010 21:55

They have said they won't do it and she'll have to go through her GP, which means she'll have to start right at the bottom of the waiting list.

She is in a really crap hospital, really, really crap. The anaesthetist and orthopedic surgeon didn't turn up to the meeting. Hmm

QMC have very good reputation for orthopaedics. ONce she gets home, could you get GP to do a referral letter to one of the consultants there?

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 02/09/2010 18:52

Her GP probably would, I can't see this ever ending at the moment
