inflammed cervix

I wonder if someone can help me. After a 2 year abstinence of sex with my husband(stress, etcetc) we started to make love again a couple of months ago. After the 3rd time I bled and seeing as my smear was due I had this done and mentioned to the nurse about this. I also stated that I sometimes get abrown show before my period is due and sometimes after I have finished. She conducted the smear and stated that my cervix was very inflammed. My last smear test 3 years ago was normal. I stupidly googled all my symptoms and all are coming back as cervical cancer. I am out of my mind with worry. Would someone or lots of you please advice and perhaps tell me of your own stories to put my mind at rest. Many thanks Kim. P.s. I'm 43, had moderate abnormal changes to my cervix 14 years ago but it was successfully treated and have had normal smears since.

P.s. Periods are normally very regular but very painful, heavy and lots of clots. No pelvic pain other than on my period although I do experience ovulation pain

Ok, stop googling for a start.
Did the nurse do any swabs to check for an infection?
The most likely explanation is the resumption of sexual activity is part of the reason - the nurse has said your cervix is inflammed and post coital bleeding is often due an inflammed cervix, an ectropion (hormone related change), other hormonal issues, infections as well as potential pre-cancerous or even cancerous changes.

Thankyou for your reply. No swabs were taken. Could resuming sex cause an inflammed cervix. Both of us have been totally faithful. The lack of sex was due to my depression at losing my dad 2 yrs ago and not maritial difficulties. I am not on any form of contraception and have taken a pregnancy test(negative.)The waiting for the smear results is hell and because I bled when the smear was taken I have a feeling that it will have to be done again. is it worth going to the dr or should I just wait for the result. Many thanks.

Well, its possible that's the cause but they ought to check other causes - it could be candida for example. A cervical screening test alone will not answer the question as it is a screening test not a diagnostic test.

Use of Liquid based cytology (assuming you're in the UK) should reduce the chances of it needing to be repeated. If you're still having problems then you should go back and see the GP. Did the nurse ask you to make an appointment with them? Even if the cervical screening test comes back as negative, your symptoms should be investigated.

I would be seeing a gynae in your circumstancs as the symptoms you describe re pain, clots and pelvic pain could all be linked to endometriosis. The brown blood that you have too can also be indicative of this.
