We've got a Braun thermometer. No probs with it, it does what it says on the packet. Boots sell them.

I have found a good alternative to ear thermometers. There is a new type out by Thermotek which require no contact-you just run over the forehead slightly away from the skin. (Mine hated the ear ones and they can be painful if you have an ear infection)
They usually cost about £30.00 but there are some on ebay at the moment-just do search for Thermotek. It is called the "no-touch" thermometer and is claimed to be very accurate-I have one and it seems to be very good to me.
