Cold turkey, I'm afraid...that's how I did it...I hated the gum, hated the patches (both made me nauseous), so I just quit. It was hell for about the first month, then it was fine.

Been quit 5 years now, and love it!

purplepeony · 10/08/2010 15:58

Whatever you find that helps, I hope you can stop.

I have just posted about my BF who has had an X ay after a long standing cough- and has been referred to a consultant after they found a shadow onher lung.
Never smoked, DH doesn't smoke, no smoke around her at all. Hope fully it is nothing-but she is terrifed.

Things like this should scare you if nothing else.

Am Really sorry about your BF purplepeony. I hope things work out well for her.

Thanks- hopefully it will be nothing, but I had a friend who had breast cancer which then went to her lungs, and she developed a cough which is exactly like my friend's- ( she died)- I am playing it down for her and hopefully it should be some silly little infection.

Through away your fags- NOW!

Ask your doctor for Champix. It is an anti smoking drug but it does not contain nicoteen. It's the only thing that worked for me. Good luck.

FrameyMcFrame · 11/08/2010 20:47

I found the nicorette inhalator worked really well for me.
I treated it just like a fag, went outside to 'smoke' it with my cup of tea etc. This helped because I still got my little break from the kids which for me was part of the addiction.

Unfortunately I started smoking again 10 months ago, I've set a quit date for 7th Sept.
I'll use the inhalator again and this time I won't be so stupid and start again.

Let me know how it goes for you.

ChilledChick2 · 12/08/2010 18:32

Hi Whensteaready. The main things about smoking is the hand to mouth habit, the routine (fag with cuppa etc) and the addictive aspect of the nicotine.

Just to make you aware that Champix is not for everyone. I've read reports and spoke to my cousin (a GP) who's confirmed that some people can feel suicidal while taking it, so if you try it be sure to report ANY feelings of depression to your GP straight away (this may or may not be linked with the Champix). They'll probably monitor you anyway.

Alternatively, you could cut down, stop, and keep yourself/your hands occupied and see how that goes. Other than that I'm wishing you all the best in your challenge and hope you do really well. Keep us posted on your progressSmile

PURPLE: really sorry to hear about your BFSad. Unfortunately, with lung cancer it doesn't matter if you're a smoker or not, eg, Roy Castle didn't smoke and he died of it and my GF never smoked (not even 1 fag in the 74yrs he was alive, was rarely around smokers and he died of it too. Some Drs are saying we all have cancer in us and it just takes something to start it off. Keep yourself well.

I would be worried about using that drug as I have had 2 bouts of depression and have now been ok for a couple of years. i am just going to use willpower, it will help that DH is off work for 2 weeks as he hates smoking and I have to sneak outside when he is in the shower etc. I do use smoking as a break from the kids and i find the worst time is during school holidays!

Smoking itself is one of the major causes of depression isn't it? You have to replace all the vits & minerals it takes from yr. body praps that would help. Good luck
