Thyroglossal cyst

I don't know the term 'Thyroglossal'. Can you say more about what kind of cyst this is ?

My dd has a cyst just above her eyebrow. GP has said it's harmless and referred us to plastic surgeon to see if he thinks we should have it removed.

where is the cyst, Mamaoftwo? I had a cyst in-between my eyebrows when I was a child (just went of its own accord after a year or so) and am about to have another in front of my ear removed (probably).

Dinny - do you remember how big the cyst got and when it started to go did it go for good ?

DD's is about malteser size & I think has got a bit less prominent in the last month (she's 8m next week). I'm really hoping it's going of it's own accord but can't they fill up with fluid again ?

Hi Magscat and dinny

It's in his throat - along the thyroid gland and at the very bottom of the tongue. It's egg shaped and about an inch and a half long. Unfortunately it has to be removed surgically. It's grown rapidly over the past couple of months but may have been there when he was born and only just become obvious.

I don't know how rare/common it is so was looking for some support.

Oh, sorry, Mamaoftwo - hope you find some support here. When is he likely to have the op?

Magscat - it pro got to about malteser size I suppose - and one day it sort of burst. Never came back. Though I'm afraid to say the on I have by my ear has gone a few times and come back a few times, so have to have it removd. hth a bit.

Mamaoftwo - really sorry I can't be more help and fingers crossed for you that all goes well.

Have they said if it's a straightforward op & have they given you a date yet?

I don't know about the op itself but ds had to have a general anasthetic last year (he was 3.5 yrs) and despite it being terrifying for me, he was absolutely fine and still talks about the smiley faces he got for lunch afterwards.

I know that's not the same as what your little one will be going through but just wanted to say that if the general is part of what's worrying you, then my experience of that with ds wasn't too bad at all. Please let us know how he goes on. Sure he'll be fine.

Thanks you two. I am naturally concerned about the anaeasthetic, but it's more the unknown at the moment about what this thing is etc. Thanks for your kind words magscat. (It's horrible isn't it? My first son has had two lots of gas - the first a major bowel op at 6 days old, and more recently at 2 and a half to have grommets fitted. And in fact, number 2 son is waiting to have a separate op at a specialist children's hospital - but that is not as urgent as this new problem!)

how does it affect him, Mamaoftwo? it's just so horrendously awful to be faced with prospective surgery on a little one, isn't it? ds had a perianal abcess when 6 months and the paed surgeon thought it likely he'd need surgery...so far it seems it has gone but I haven't relaxed just yet... You really have been through the mill. Hoping things are resolved quickly for you and ds.

Dinny - the palstic surgeon cancelled the appointment we had waited 4 months to get (he had a family crisis) and we don't know when it'll be rearranged yet so could be ages before we know more. Not too worried as I was going to suggest monitoring it a while longer anyway.
