I was diagnosed several years ago when I was TTC and wasn't having periods.

Main symptoms were lack of periods. I boought the PCOS diet book by Collette Harris - I really recommend - she explains all the symptoms and what you need to do to resolve - basically follow a low GI diet.

symptoms:
excess weight
excess hair
acne
irregular/absent ovulation/periods
enlarged follicles on ovaries

some, all or none of the above

Have a look at Verity

I was diagnosed about 18 years ago now. My symptoms are lack of periods (can be anything from 2 - 9 months apart), facial hair which has improved vastly with electrolysis and difficulty in losing weight from around my middle.

I had fertility treatment and eventually had 2 lovely children.

I discovered I had it when I stopped bleeding on the 7 day break between pills. I have horrible teenage skin (despite being 30) and have problems with my weight. I have, however, managed to have 2 children relatively easily despite being told that I would need help to conceive.

i have literally just come back from the doctors to have blood tests to look into this. i have cysts on my ovaries anyway and my last period i went 45 days and so far after 47 days im waiting for the next.

the doctor suspects PCOS so i'll wait and see in my follow up appointment in 2 weeks what the blood tests bring up.

I have a liitle girl already and have had serious gynae problems for 5 years and its relief to finally (hopefully) have a diagnosis. we are TTC DC2 so hopefully it doesnt effect my fertility too much. If it does, does anyone know what routes there are to take? that may be another thread though

I have Polycystic Ovaries but not PCOS in that I do not have most of the symptoms. In fact my only symptom is very irregular/absent periods, hence I rarely ovulate. Was diagnosed when ttc DS1 -they did an internal scan which showed lots of tiny cysts.

I had Clomid to help conceive DS1. DS2 was my miracle baby (born nearly 2 years after DS1 with no periods at all inbetween!) We were ttc again recently and I conceived again on Clomid but MCd so now waiting to bleed again so I can start ttc (not holding my breath... it could be a long wait!)

I also have no other symptoms. I have no excess hair and although slightly overweight nothing too drastic, I've never suffered with spots even throughout puberty so think I just have the irregular period side of things.

Do you have to be TTC for a certain length of time before you are offered clomid or other treatments? I understand there are injections and all sorts available.

FeelingOld · 03/08/2010 08:59

Things may have changed as my 2 dcs are 15 and 10 now but when i was ttc my 1st I was not offered clomid until I had been trying for 2 years, was on clomid for about a year and a half and then went on to perganol (sp??) injections and nasal sprays and was on those for about 2 and a half years before i got pregnant.

Another symptom not yet mentioned can be thinning hair on the top region of the scalp. As mentioned by others though, you may have no obvious symptoms. Dianette is the usual pill given to treat, as well as low gi diet. I was given Clomid & Metformin, and conceived very quickly.

Thank you for all your replies. Have been to the doctor and i'm booked up for blood tests and scans.
