Nasty-looking tonsil

PrettyCandles · 28/07/2010 17:49

One of my tonsils is massively swollen, bulges so far the uvula touches it, and there are what appear to be blobs and pockets of pus on it.

Do I need to show this to the dr?

I've also been feeling fairly vile for the last few days, sore throat, earache, nausea, generally grim.

You have tonsilitus. Go docs, might need antibiotics

Keziahhopes · 29/07/2010 00:35

Hope you got something from the dr.

When I have problems with tonsils I have found buying Difflam mouthwash (also comes in a spray) from hte pharmacy really helpful on top of antibiotics from the dr - the difflam was prescribed by ENT ward when I was last in with tonsilitis and it really helps with numbing hte pain and reducing infection.

You may need to go to hospital now.

If it is a Quinsy then this is life threatening. Can you swallow your own saliva ok?

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 29/07/2010 00:41

Yup, tonsilitis. Pop to the GP, it's infectious until the fever goes.

hobbgoblin · 29/07/2010 00:43

oh i just noticed this post was from earlier.

I had a tonsil that swelled up to this size and was ambulanced to hosp as it was Quinsy

zazen · 29/07/2010 00:43

You have bacteria in your tonsil and will need an antibiotic. Go to your GP asap. Gargle hot water and salt until then.

Valpollicella · 29/07/2010 00:44

Ok, at the least you have tonsillitis, which will quite rapidly spread to the other side of your throat quickly.

Tonight - you need to gargle with salt water. Utterly grim I know, but one pint of boiled water, cooled and then 1.5 tea spoons of salt dissolved.

Gargle it til you can't gargle no more

Then straight to the docs in the morning for anti-b's

giraffesCanDanceInTheSun · 29/07/2010 00:57

poor you, am just over it.

PrettyCandles · 29/07/2010 08:09

Ugh I suspected tonsilitis but I was hoping you'ld say not to bother going to the dr.

I really don't need this. It is such a hassle going to the dr - especially in the hols with 3 dc in tow.

Hi, it will sadly be even more hassle being sent into hospital via ambulance like I was a few weeks ago with tonsillitis (that then led to sepsis). Hope you can get an apt.

PrettyCandles · 29/07/2010 23:27

Are you sure it's really that bad? I felt a bit better today and it's less swollen, so I didn't call the dr.

Well you could wait until you all have tonsillitis, and go together..
not really my idea of a holiday, everyone including you being sick, but there are horses for courses I suppose.

I hope you're not spreading it around, and keep everyone indoors.

I'd not thank you for infecting me.

PrettyCandles · 30/07/2010 07:25

I do thank you all for your advice, even though I've not followed it. I'm feeling much better today and, having read up a bit on tonsilitis, I doubt the GP would have given me abs anyway. I think I've had the viral sort, generously given to me by ds1 ( who had a flu-type illness last week) who picked it up from ds2 (who had a flu-type illness the week before).

Take echinacea and gargle with 2 drops of Ttree in warm water.
