DS has diarroea and prescribed Dioralyte and no food for 24 hours!!!!

Ds has had an awful week, teething, off his food, only wanting milk and then lots of wind which in turn resulted in every trump needing a nappy change if you know what I mean. Took him to the doctors today after 4 days of liquid poos and left a sample with them. Doctor has said no solids or milk for 24 hours and plenty of water and Dioralyte. Unfortunately he hates the stuff and just has water thankfully. His poor bottom is so sore too so I am trying to use aqeuos cream gently. Anyone else's little ones had this????

Yep, mine has. She didn't really want to eat, anyhow. I used Bepanthen on her bum and it helped a lot. As long as he is drinking lots of water it should be okay.

Start him out eating again when it's time w/some toast. We did the BRAT diet - bananas, rice, apples - left out the tea, though. And didn't give her dairy again till she'd gone 24 hours w/no runny nappies.

Yep my DD has this at the moment. She has to sorest bottom. I have something simila to Diralyte and she liked the Banana one. Also been given Daktacort. No idea how effective it will be. Hopefully both our little ones will be feeling much better in 24hrs.

Well, it could be gastroenteritis in conjunction the teething. Most cases of gastroenteritis are caused by viruses that are extraordinarily contagious. One, a rotavirus, is so contagious, nearly 100% of the human population will contract it in childhood at one point or another. If he doesn't like the Dioralyte you can always make your own rehydration salts. I used to have a recipe I used b/c I used to do a lot of strenous hillwalking and carry 30-40lbs. of gear on my back for miles. I didn't like a lot of rehydration powders b/c they contain artificial sweetners, which make me bloated and sick.

I've been trying to find a home-made electrolyte recipe, expat, only most of the sites that mention it say don't use it...

Anyway, pupness, IIRC my HV used to recommend something like 1 tsp salt + 1tbs sugar in 1 litre of boiled water - does that sound about right to anybody else?

Or you can use flat lemonade or flat coke (pref with sugar, not saccharin) or else juice diluted very thinly with water or very dilute squash - again with sugar not sweeteners.

It's horrible when they have a tummy bug, hope DS is over it soon.

Well the 24 hours without food went ok and the ds did really well. Just gave him weak aptamil and a bit of baby rice and he has brightened up a bit after being very sleepy all day. I hope it was a long enough period and that it doesn't return. His pre-bath nappy was a little better - not so watery if you know what I mean. I know you are meant to leave the intestine to cure itself but how do you know if it has if the runny nappy is a result of teething???

A runny nappy can be a result of teething, yep, most definitely. DD had them w/teething. But we still laid off the milk and did the BRAT (yep, w/TOAST, preggo brain here) and it always did the trick. I used watered-down apple juice + cool boiled water and that seemed to help.

Will try apple juice but his gums are so sore he is refusing anything too difficult to chew like toast so can't avoid giving him a bottle - hope I'm not asking for trouble. Can't fast him again, poor fella??

Let him be your guide. He'll let you know when he's ready to eat again. Don't worry, he won't starve! Think about the times when you have a dodgy tummy - sometimes it's a few days before you feel like eating much.

As long as he is drinking plenty and giving your wet nappies regularly.

Water the apple juice down w/cool, boiled water.

He might go for a banana puree which won't require him to chew much.

You're not wrong - I have started to relax a bit and the little fella is now eating really well. Just been giving him mango and baby rice or apricot and apple and baby rice. Soon I will start on a bit of chicken but he seems to like the sweet dishes. The upset tummy has cleared up thank goodness. Thanks and will try the dilute apple juice

It's heartwrenching to watch them go through it, I know. He deffo appears to be on the mend if he's happily eating again. How are his nappies?

nappies are much better and back to normal - quite amazed actually that it can be sorted out with 24 hours of fasting. He is much happier and we are not going through 3 nappies an hour. We use Motherease so you can imagine the washing machine was never off!! Thanks again - but it makes you realise that they seem to grow up inspite of you - so getting stressed about the whole eating thing is pointless.

It's still rough! There's nothing worse than seeing your baby ill. Glad he's on the mend. Funny how they can get their point across perfectly clear even though they can't speak yet.

my kids hate dioralyte,in stead i give them flat lemonade or flat coke it really settles their tummys.

how horrid! dd1 had a couple of nasty tummy bugs when younger and I used metanium for the nappy rash which is fabulous!( you can get it over the counter in boots). As otherss have said , no dairy , just very bland food - mashed potato, rice, banana mashed up etc. Others have suggested juice but that could irritate the gut IMO.Good luck!it won't last, honestly. Even if you dettox spray everything in sight, there are still bugs out there - plus he will have a stronger constitution and defence system after this so in a way, it's good!(iyswim)
