Cycle suddenly shorter - period every 2 weeks

KillerCleavage · 17/07/2010 22:23

My cycle has been shortish for the last few years (23-26 days between periods) but for the last month I've had a period every two weeks. Same old period, not shorter or lighter, now it's just two instead one.

I'm on the mini pill and am 42. I've had a google and the likelihood is that I'm probably perimenopausal but I just wondered if anyone else had the same thing happen and whether it is anything to worry about.

I'm planning to give it another 2 weeks to see if it happens again before I go to the GP. Should I go sooner?

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks. I'm pretty sure that's what it is for me too.

sounds like it ..same for me ..

hormonesnomore · 17/07/2010 23:23

Same happened to me at the age of 38(!), periods then gradually became so frequent that no sooner had one finished but another would start.

After about a year I had one then a 6 month gap till the next one and eventually they fizzled out altogether.

I've had no other menopausal symptoms whatsoever and don't think you have anything to worry about, unless you were planning to get pregnant.

hormonesnomore · 17/07/2010 23:24

Oh, obviously not, just read that you're on the pill, sorry.

KillerCleavage · 17/07/2010 23:25

Thanks ladies.

I hoped I'd be like my Mum who didn't start going through this till she was 50. Will get it checked out if it happens in another 2 weeks though but am expecting to be told it's the start of menopause.

Definitely the menopause...My periods are all over the place too.

KillerCleavage · 17/07/2010 23:33

Sorry hormonesnomore, didn't see your post til I'd posted my last one. No definately not pregnant. That sounds terrible though, having constant periods for a year. Every 2 weeks is bad enough!

The only other symptom (it's on a few sites I've looked at) I've had of being peri-menopausal is having little energy. I'd just put it down to me being a lazy bugger who'd rather spend time on here or sat on my bum on the sofa than clean the house lol. I was beginning to wonder what was wrong with me. Makes sense now I think.

Mine are getting slightly shorter ,but only by a day or two.I am 46 .I would check with the doc if I were you, possibly some hormone supplementation would help,or it could have some other cause.

KillerCleavage · 18/07/2010 23:40

Thanks. I'm definitely going to get it checked out as I'm finding the lack of energy that has descended in the last month a real problem.

My house is starting to look like I should call in Kim and Aggie. I just can't be arsed to do anything, except sit on my arse, and that's not like me.

Could be fibroids.

notimetoshop · 19/07/2010 00:03

I don't want to crash, but I had similar. But as well as the tiredness - like a kind of migrane without the headache - I get nausea, almost like morning sickness but not anything like as severe. Is that peri-menopausal? I've been off alcohol for months??

KillerCleavage · 19/07/2010 00:07

Thanks seasalt Aint us girls lucky?

To be honest I'm expecting anything including fibroids. Am just not enjoying the 2 for 1 deal right now but know it could be worse.

Crash away notimetoshop happy to share with anyone who needs help with this.

I've not had the nausea you describe but to be honest the list of symptoms I've found for being peri-menopausal include just about everything. No idea if alcohol is a factor but I'm still on it.

hi, thought i would throw my two peneth in. i am 45 (i think, keep forgetting, really) and oddly enough was going to post a similar post - the last few months my cycles have been REALLY short too, last month 13 day cycle and this month possibly 12 as i think i am going to come on again,i thought i felt a bit bloated, am permanently hormonal so that is nothing to go by and i did notice the last few days that i had a couple of spots on my face (only get the odd one or two pre a period). funny really, my dh seems to remember one of the many fertility consultants that we saw a few years back when ttc No. 2 (unsuccessfully i might add) that many women get a 'pre menopausal rush', like the body giving it one last ditch attempt to get pg before it is too late, hence some women getting pg with twins laste 40's, anyway, he seems to remember that we were told (i don't really remember much at all from that phase of my life, good) that some women my age ovulate more than once a month, point being that might explain why you and i are getting more than one af a month............still not getting pg though! probably just as well really....i'm going to miss af's when they are gone, really i am

KillerCleavage · 20/07/2010 21:17

That's interesting kelway hadn't heard that before. Sorry you didn't mtc tho.

What is strange though when I think about it now is that at the back end of last year I went through a period of about 2-3 months when my sex drive went through the roof. DP thought all this birthdays and Chistmasses had arrived at once. I've never known anything like it, I was horny all the time! Since then I've been on a downward spiral and my libido has packed up and emigrated I think. I wonder now if that was the start of this. A last chance hormone surge.

I did go to the Family Planning clinic yesterday as I needed more pills anyway and spoke to the Doctor. She thinks it's highly likely that it's the start of the change as one of the clear signs is a much shorter cycle along with the lethargy and loss of libido. She changed my pill to Cerazette as she thinks it will stop me bleeding and has advised me to see the GP to get a blood test to confirm menopause. If it does then it's likely I'll be put on HRT.

Jeez, talk about a wake up call for getting older!
