I had a routine smear in January which came back bordelrine changes, my repeat one 6 weeks ago has just come back as Severe dyskaryosis/ CIN III and I have to wait for a colposcopy appointment now. I am very frightened what this means. I don't care about the treatment, colposcopy etc, that could hurt as much as childbirth for all I care as long as it makes me better but what I would like to know is if anyone else has gone through this and should I be as petrified as I am? Please help

Hi there

I had a colposcopy five years ago, following a series of dodgy smear tests and then one that was as severe as the one you've had. My letter said that they would just have a look and not do any treatment till another time, although in the event they treated me at the same time. It wasn't too bad- although I was not expecting it to happen there and then so was a little upset and shaken afterwards. If you go ready for the treatment I am sure you will feel fine.

I have had all clear smears since, except one borderline changes which then on the retest was fine. This treatment is a preventative measure, and the fact that they have picked up on it now means you will be fine. Try not to be scared!

The one thing that I wished someone had warned me about was that about 4-6wks later I had what I think must have been a 'scab' (for want of a better term!) come away. It was a bit frightening to pass it- a bit like a little bit of liver or something (sorry if TMI- just wish I had been warned!). You will be fine. Try to relax .
Good luck!

Thank you for your message, it's nice to hear someone else's experience and how you got through it. I don't think I've ever been so scared. I am thinking the worst and because I 3 very young children I get even more upset. I just got my colposcopy appointment for next thursday so be glad when it's all done. Thank you again.

try not to worry...easy for me to say i know! I had CINIII quite some time ago now and have been fine since. You only had your last smear recently which showed borderline changes. when my smear came back CINIII i hadn't had a smear previously for 10 years so was very scared! the treatment isn't too bad although i was a coward and opted for a general anaesthetic. This dragged things out because i had to then wait and go in as an inpatient. Much better to be brave and have treatment over and done with in the clinic! You will be fine please please try not to worry....and that is coming from the biggest baby of all. good luck
