Swearing in MPs is my new favourite tv

I also loved The Queen's Queue.

It's on BBC Parliament in case anyone else likes 'gentle tv'.

I love all the different religious texts, oaths/affirmations and all the different types of MPs.

I've just sat and watched hoping to see my newly elected Labour MP. Just found out it takes several days! 😂

JewelleryCat · 09/07/2024 18:43

I turned over to watch some of it and it’s been suspended until 7.30. Do we know why? BBC News live page hasn’t said

FiveFoxes · 09/07/2024 18:47

I think they're just having a break

How long will they keep swearing in for today? I presume they’re going to do some more swearing in tomorrow and maybe the next day as well

Anonym00se · 09/07/2024 19:01

Makes a nice change from “swearing at” MPs!

Zonder · 09/07/2024 19:05

I love it too. Watching on YouTube.

mum2jakie · 09/07/2024 19:33

Fascinating stuff. Thanks for the thread. I didn't know this process would be televised.

mum2jakie · 09/07/2024 19:34

One of the Welsh MPs is making his oath in Welsh and English

CrushingOnRubies · 09/07/2024 20:00

This is weirdly fascinating.

Who's the lady doing the swearing in?

Jeckyl · 09/07/2024 20:06

What holy text did the female MP want that wasn’t laid out ready? They had to get it from another desk? I can’t figure out what she said!

FiveFoxes · 09/07/2024 22:17

Was that the Torah? For some reason they kept that on another desk.

I am confused why some of them want to swear on the Old or New Testament only.

Laughing at the, at least two, MPs who said they wanted to swear on the King Charles Bible!

(I also enjoyed the clock when they had a break until 7.30)

@FiveFoxes The King James bible surely?

FiveFoxes · 09/07/2024 22:41

King James Bible was indeed on offer (and interestingly most popular). They were trying to ask for it and said the wrong kings name!

I think it was something more obscure because the official seemed to pause, then had to look around and didn’t seem to know where it was at first.

I was curious too, so I Googled and apparently there was a special edition of the (King James) Bible created for Charles' coronation - maybe they wanted that?

Noosnom · 10/07/2024 07:55

I missed this yesterday. Hopefully it'll be on for a couple more days.
