Male politicians can - and I suspect do - traipse around in the same boring suits continuously. And in the case of Boris they look can get away with looking like crumpled ragbags.

In this day and age a woman in the public eye is still either tagged a frump or a slut!

(And established religion is the guiltiest of all for this.)

Agree with you. A male politician's wife should not even have their wardrobe the subject of debate, and be allowed to be as private as they wish.

Though if scruffiness had been the only bad thing about Boris Johnson, then Victoria Starmer would not even have been there on Friday.

People saw the dress, thought it looked nice, wondered where it came from.
That doesn't mean they are not also interested in the politics.

To be fair I remember when Corbyn was first Labour leader and on radio 4 they reported on his first speech in parliament as leader. Not a word on what he said, just comment on his clothes.

Agreed. It's programmed into people to do this. I find myself doing it in my head sometimes and give myself a good telling off. Not that I wouldn't have said Boris was a scruff, but he's an outlier. As long as men are wearing normal-ish clothes, nobody comments on them.

Hmmm I don't know. Women have the option to wear sober suits too if they so wish - did anyone analyse what Rachel Reeves wore when she went into Downing Street to be appointed Chancellor? - but a lovely, and not inexpensive, red dress like the one worn by VS is much more noticeable and attracts comments.
