So vocal and present during the campaign and haven’t seen her anywhere at all today 🤷‍♀️😳… just being nosey. 🤔

Agree.

This is not about diminishing qualifications. AR has said herself she's succeeded despite not having them, but part of what's drawn her to politics is to try and change things, so that girls like her don't face the same struggle and being written off at age 16 as a failure.

Like her or not, AR is representative of lots of people in the UK. Both her original circumstances and the desire to do better and want more. Politics needs diversity of experience and thought in it, otherwise it isn't reflective of the electorate it claims to represent.

If you've got a cracking degree and solid post-grad professional experience - brilliant. But you have no idea what it's like to come from grinding poverty and try and claw your way though just to survive - let alone thrive. Those voices are just as important, because they know the reality, and when it comes to trying to improve or fix something, then why wouldn't you want to hear from someone that's lived it?

There are people ‘from grinding poverty’ with degrees, you know…

U53rName · 05/07/2024 23:04

Agree. Why is she not capable of earning an A-C in maths and English? It’s a minimum requirement for everyone else, after all.

Who says she's not capable of it? She just hasn't done it.

Passing exams means you get a piece of paper proving you have a particular skill or level of knowledge. An absence of the piece of paper doesn't mean an absence of the skill or knowledge.

It's harder to succeed without formal qualifications, not easier. She's not cheating, she's taken the harder road.

Jellycatspyjamas · 05/07/2024 23:07

Why is she not capable of earning an A-C in maths and English?

What makes you think she isn’t capable as opposed to her not having the opportunity to sit exams as a teenage mum. Maybe going back to tick a low level educational box isn’t the best use of an experienced politician, now Deputy Prime Minister.

Germanpassport · 05/07/2024 22:49

@LuluBlakey1 that's all extremely admirable but that doesn't give her the rights on a tough childhood. People /children from all backgrounds suffer and I think it's the politics of envy and bitterness in her that I find deeply concerning.
Ironic because we are told rich Estonians can't empathise with anyone.

Did you mean Etonians?

powershowerforanhour · 05/07/2024 23:20

Quite a few of this lot didn't have any GCSEs:

why would you say this? Have I missed something?

AhNowTed · 05/07/2024 23:30

The snobbery here is disgusting.

FWIW.

I was kicked out of school at 15 with no qualifications.

But I was a bright girl, whose potential wasn't recognised, not least by me.

The single event of a government run computing course changed my life.

Then a combination of opportunity and luck led to a successful career and security.

I would far rather the Angela Rayners of the world, than the privileged Cameron's, Rees Moggs, Johnson's and Sunaks who sail through life with a sense of entitlement, that far outweighs their actual talent, coupled with a paid-for education that affords them a network of opportunities and jobs at the top of the spectrum without them having to prove their worth,

A sense of entitlement that has led the country into the state it is now in.

Give me Angela Rayner every time.

LuluBlakey1 · 05/07/2024 23:32

There are some very interesting facts about her in this 'Vogue' article. I had no idea about her mother being bi-polar and Angela caring for her or that she had a child born at 23 weeks who is blind.

Tenaciousbeyondallthings · 05/07/2024 23:38

I am really shocked y the snobby misogyny on here towards AR.

To me her becoming deputy PM and minister of state IN SPITE of a lack of qualifications is yet another admirable character plus in my book.. and yes whilst there are many who come from grinding poverty and achieve academic success, to climb as far as she has - has taken incredible tenacity in the face of the appalling class and sex discrimination obviously so alive and well in this country. As demonstrated on this thread tonight.

Get over yourselves. She won against the might of a disgusting propaganda campaign by the tax evading daily fail and an overwhelming right wing press.

My preference is none of the above. I prefer someone who stayed in school, worked their socks off, got their qualifications, and went on to get a degree at university. give me a Lisa Nandy or a David Lammy every time.

AmelieTaylor · 05/07/2024 22:36

@9GreenBottles

why did you want her out?

what am I missing?

im most definitely NOT a labour fan & thought she was the only good news! (Except her diabolical dress sense)

Nothing to do with her class, education, accent, dress sense or anything else that may have been mentioned but due to her stance on transwomen being women. I have responded to clarify this earlier in the thread but it was a few pages back.

The interview in this thread didn’t make me change my mind about her compared to other politicians who appeared to soften their stance, certainly during the election campaign. After the attempt to oust her as party chair a few years ago resulted in her promotion to deputy leader, I imagine she is a real political hustler (or has something on Keir Starmer 🙂) and she’ll be after his job now. Since I believe sex is more important than gender identity, I think she’s dangerous and it would have been better if she hadn’t been re-elected.

However, having seen the new cabinet, I still have serious misgivings about what direction women’s rights will go.

As I recall, there wasn't the same amount of sneering when John Major became PM despite leaving school at 16 years old with only 3 O Levels (I think). He was admired for having achieved what he had despite his humble beginnings.

Is it because he didn't have a northern accent by any chance? Or because he was a man? Is AR being judged because she was a single mum?

I think she’s being judged because many view her as arrogant, opportunistic and a bit of a grifter. And the council house stuff did her no favours.

I’m no fan of John Major but he wasn’t as abrasive as she is.

AhNowTed · 05/07/2024 23:54

@U53rName

Not every bright kid has the opportunity to finish school or go to university.

Some are born to parents who, despite their potential, were never encouraged or told they were clever enough. And many end up caring for their parent as she did.

The fact that Angela Rayner rose above all that was against her.. her parents were poor, her mother had severe mental health problems, and she was pregnant at 16.

Yet she had the tenacity, determination and intelligence to rise above this, to go from working in social care to being a government minister.

She is to be absolutely applauded.

Leniriefenstahl · 05/07/2024 23:56

Jess Philips is as working class and gobby with a distinctive accent but doesn’t attract the same disdain. Wonder why ? Like Jess btw, just curious why AR is so disliked by certain MNetters.

You're being just plain nasty, now. How does someone's face affect their politics?

AnitaLoos · 06/07/2024 00:04

So much internalised misogyny here. ‘Her face is equally offensive’. Christ, it’s sad. I love Starmer because he promotes women. Even women with ‘offensive’ faces. 🙄

MidnightMeltdown · 06/07/2024 00:04

If Kier is taken ill, AR could be PM! She would be a total embarrassment on the international stage IMO.

I don't care about her accent or the fact that she's working class. Lots of people are working class, they're not all gobby and brash like her. Not to mention her outfits. The number of times I've seen her sitting in parliament with her tits hanging out as if she's going to Magaluf. Hardly appropriate.

We already have a bad enough reputation without wheeling her out.

Well now let's see.

Boris Johnson. Gobby and brash, terrible suits and hair. A gaggle of kids some of whom he admits are his own. Affairs galore.

A national embarrassment.

See the hypocrisy?

AhNowTed · 06/07/2024 00:17

Anyway suck it up.

Angela Rayner is a government minister, and the party has a huge majority such that they really don't need to listen to the Daily Mail type attacks on her anymore.

Too bad.

SkippysEar · 06/07/2024 00:23

Missing the point @Leniriefenstahl Its nothing to do with class. Rayner isnt a figure of ridicule due to her class, its how she portrays herself. Plenty Tories are working class too, as are plenty of Labour. People mock Boris all day long but that's OK cos he's minted? Can't we laugh at anyone we feel like? People mocked David Cameron cos he was rich/gammon, but is that to say he didn't have awful things in his life? He lost a child age 6, can you imagine how terrible that is. They're all just people. Mock Rishi for his big ears and Toby jug face, Im sure neither he nor I will care less.

Do you expect her to look like the Princess of Wales.

Sorry but can we not have working class people in public life?

An articulate woman who has, despite her upbringing, reached the pinnacle of public life. Through sheer talent and tenacity.

All power to her.

@Jellycatspyjamas even for vocational careers you need maths and English at pass level and have done for years. Thats my whole point. For basically any job you need to have a minimum basic standard. Seems MPs need less that a shelf stacker which is just absurd. But I'm sure we're all bored of this now. I'm finna head over to Gransnet to discuss the Showaddywaddy outfit instead.

@SkippysEar

We can't go back in time. She had what she needed to get her first job & she's gained a LOT of experience. Theres no point in comparing her paper qualifications to what the kids these days need.

im sure you think your postings make you look superior, they don't. They just make you look judgemental & not very nice. They're very bitchy.
