Argh flu / covid / similar - unable to vote?

I've woken up in the night with a temperature and headache and I'm unlikely to get to the polling station. My reading of the rules for proxy votes is that to get a proxy I need a) a printer, b) a doctor or nurse to sign, and c) someone registered in the constituency to vote on my behalf. I have none of these! I wouldn't normally go to the GP on day 1 with something like this. And my husband is away so I only have my mum with me who is registered in a different constituency.

Does anyone know better than me a way I can vote or am I right that I won't be able to unless I drag myself there somehow and risk infecting everyone? My mum doesn't drive and wouldn't be strong enough to take me in a wheelbarrow...

They don't need to be registered in your constituency.

They need to be a registered voter, eligible to vote in that type of election.

However, your mum does have to be able to attend your nominated polling station.

Sorry you’re not well, OP.

If it was me and I really wanted to vote, I’d just dose up with paracetamol and go.
So it really depends on how you feel, how difficult it is to get there and whether you think it will leave you completely floored. There may be a little window during the course of the day where you do feel slightly better and stations are open ‘til 10pm.

Covid is rife this summer, it’s everywhere and people are advised not to test. You may rest assured that if you do attend, you will not be the only one infecting others. There is a significant number of people with few or no symptoms who are COVID positive and spreading it but non the wiser !

Sorry I don’t know much about proxy voting. Hopefully someone may be able to advise.

I'm the same.

I'm just not going. I have no confidence in any of them anyways. All a bunch of snakes.

Dose up on everything and just go. If you need transport ask a friend/taxi or even the canvassers for the party you will be voting for they may give you a lift.

If you are too unwell to attend the polling station, covid or any other reason, and cannot attend a polling station and cannot arrange an emergency proxy vote, then you just have to resign yourself to not voting.

If you are well enough to go, but know yourself to be infectious (or think it's highly likely that you're infectious) then wear a good quality mask and request that your ID check is done outside - polling stations should have arrangements for this in place as a disability adjustment (for the immunocompromised who need to mask everywhere indoors) and I can't think of a single good reason not to extend it to the infectious, especially as it's better for the well-being of polling station staff. They might be exposed to those who don't know/suspect they are infectious but that's no reason to have avoidable exposure to those who are.

Oh no, I had to miss voting one election because I had flu, could you get a taxi if it is quite near a put a mask on

LivingDeadGirlUK · 04/07/2024 06:58

I would dose up ok meds and haul myself over there, its a 10 min walk for me though no car needed.

SnakesAndArrows · 04/07/2024 07:28

Mask and Uber? I usually feel better outside in fresh air, so if it’s not so bad that you can’t get dressed I’d give it a go. Might even do you some good! Hope you feel better soon.

So you leave the decision to everyone else? Not very sensible.

Plus it's not true they are all the same - that's a cop out.
