Keir Starmer accepted £76,000 of freebies including tickets to over 20 football games (ft.com)

Sir Keir Starmer accepted £76,000 worth of entertainment, clothes and similar freebies from UK donors since the 2019 general election, more than almost any other MP, according to research by the Financial Times.

It's been the same everywhere I've worked - state and private sectors.

This is probably one of those things where different rules apply for the 1%, and they shouldn't especially for politicians fgs. In my job the most I can be influenced to do via a gift is fairly inconsequential, Kier is now (as an MP) voting on laws and will have even more power as PM.

I'm not even allowed to accept gifts from clients at the end of a contract as a thanks when I will have no future contact with them.

I accept he's done it within the law, but this is the epitome of 'one rule for us another for the plebs'. It simply shouldn't be allowed. The law is for the rich though, so I'm not surprised.

Now if Kier was going to make politicians have to work to the same rules as the rest of us i.e. never accept gifts, that might be enough for me to vote for him. But he won't.

To be fair to Keir he might find it difficult to get such a change through Parliament as MPs wouldn't want to give up their freebies, I bet.

😂 quiet day at CCHQ is it OP?

IFollowRivers · 02/07/2024 18:00

Person does thing he is permitted to do shock!

Then goes home to his family (presumably to tell them how he got away with doing something he is allowed to do)

OP this is pathetic

LoudSnoringDog · 02/07/2024 18:01

And SO WHAT ?

I'm more concerned with what people are accepting and not declaring

( how is Jonathan "ape man" Gullis" so rich now??)

HauntedPollingBooth · 02/07/2024 18:03

I'm now just waiting for a thread on 'Keir Starmer the Part Time Prime Minister' to appear after Starmer mentioning he wants to keep Friday family time dedicated if at all possible. I mean, if Dominic Raab could close the sea while he was on holiday then surely Starmer should be working at least 36 hours a day? Hmm

Speaking to reporters at a warehouse in North East Derbyshire, the Labour leader said: “The system is one where if we take any contribution or donation of any sort that is all set out and declared. And that’s what we’ve done properly on my behalf.

“Quite a lot of that was Arsenal hospitality, particularly away games where, as you can appreciate, my desire to go in the stands is not always met with approval by the security teams around me, which inevitably means that I’m in corporate hospitality if I want to see the game.”

So he has done nothing wrong.

Edited

Except for his choice of team Wink

nodogz · 02/07/2024 18:04

@MrsTerryPratchett he's a politician not an officer. You being a local government officer/employee is very different.

Apples and oranges.

I have a fair understanding of Westminster through my work and this seems pretty reasonable to me. I can't get excited about it.

Steady on.

Many would consider supporting Arsenal doing something wrong.
That is the big story here.

Well he will be stopping work at 6pm every Friday, so whist the country goes to the dogs over the weekends, he will need tickets for events. Bless him.

He hasn't said anything about the weekends only that Friday nights are for his family.

Article is behind paywall and I exhausted my sharing limit. Google reposts

All I'm saying is that he's the same as everyone else. And he's not even in power yet

Show me where he's backhanded NHS contracts worth millions to his mates, lied to Parliament, broken the law and cheated on his wife, then you can say he's the same as everyone else.

Janehasamane · 02/07/2024 18:09

Op some folks are so desperate for Labour to get in you could post he was cheating on his wife with prositututes and some posters would say so.

Thingscanonlygetsunk · 02/07/2024 18:09

Andthereitis · 02/07/2024 17:34

It's happened because people know he'll be next prime minister and that's why it's wrong.

If you get equivalent to your wage in freebies from suppliers or contractors at work... How would that be right?

The Loto only gets paid £15000, no wonder Rish! is going to California.

VoteOutToHelpOut · 02/07/2024 18:09

You know I don't even like Starmer that much, but I am warming to him a bit. Like Angela Rayner he is dealing with attempted smears with dignity.

That backfired too, given it's an important part of their families Jewish heritage.

Schooled?

I'm not changing my tone.

I'm saying that those believing in saint Sir Keir will be disappointed at some stage. He's exactly the same as everyone else. And in a few years time there will be same tune about mates, contracts etc

" The highest declarations in the gifts, benefits and hospitality section of the register during the last parliament was Andrew Bridgen, a former Tory MP who received more than £4mn of interest-free loans from millionaire Jeremy Hosking to cover legal expenses.

Siobhain McDonagh, a Labour MP, received an interest-free loan of £1.2mn from Lord Alli to move house to enable her unwell sister to live with her.

Jeremy Corbyn, former Labour leader, made declarations totalling more than £600,000 in relation to legal costs being covered by supporters.

Former prime ministers Theresa May and Liz Truss declared £249,000 and £47,000, respectively, from Gatwick and Heathrow airports. As former heads of government, the airports automatically upgrade both to travel using its VIP suites."

Well he isn't the same as everyone else as he has declared them like he is supposed to. Others have been caught out not declaring.

Man obeys rules set isn't quite the ooo err post you thought it would be.

Except they haven't have they ?

And even if they did, how would we know, with all the Reform candidates wanting to slaughter migrants ?

What has where his wife went to school got to do with anything?

As for where Keir went to school, that has been hashed out a thousand times on MN.

Next!

Some people are so desperate to try and stop an anticipated Labour landslide that they’ll try to throw unwarranted slurs at its leader. Very poor, OP.

It’s not really a slur though is it, he’s been enjoying expensive freebies , so it’s a fair observation. It’s not like she made it up. It’s a factual post

So the best sleaze that the Tories have been able to dig up on Starmer is:

a) he likes to have Friday night dinners with his family; and

b) he has accepted gifts that he is allowed to accept and recorded and declared them in the proper way. Much of the £76K seems to involve his obsession withArsenal.

God what a slimeball he is.

You’ve forgotten about the time he bought a field for his parents to use as a donkey sanctuary and then paid capital gains tax on it when he sold it.

Given that it’s entirely legal, it’s dwarfed by gifts to some of his colleagues and he’s declared it, why would she bother posting it unless she had some ulterior motive? Especially on the GE board.

Thingscanonlygetsunk · 02/07/2024 18:16

On the subject of freebies, can anyone recall how much the former MP for Shipley received from the gambling industry, before using that money to bet on himself losing the constituency this time around?

Since we are on freebies, my very own former MP #dklemon (I note he doesn't seem to be bothering campaigning this time, not found a poster yet and I have run most of the streets of his constituency during the past 5 weeks) with the Polish parent had the tax payer spend nearly £20000 on Polish lessons.

Shall I continue?

VoteOutToHelpOut · 02/07/2024 18:17

I wonder what tomorrow's final efforts will be?

Keir sometimes wears the same underpants two days running.

Keir doesn't put the tomato ketchup back in the fridge

Keir sometimes farts in bed
