General election 2024

What’s your plan for election night?

Pipsqueaker · 01/07/2024 21:03

I plan on settling down on the sofa at 9:45 in time for the exit poll.

I think I will watch on Channel 4. I normally tune into the BBC, but I find Laura Kuenssberg annoying and will be sad Hugh isn't presenting. So Channel 4 for me, as I like Maitlis and Guru-Murthy.

Pizza for dinner, with Baileys and Malteesers as the night goes on.

I’m in work on Friday morning (albeit from home) so I will try to head to bed by 3:30, as I’m hoping the result should be pretty clear by then?

Will probably wake at about 8, stick on Radio 4 and check out mumsnet before crawling to my desk with a strong coffee!

I often don't sleep well (like tonight) so thinking of staying up. Booked Friday off work & the kids are staying the night with their grandparents, but DH left it too late to book Friday off. He's annoyed now as he wants to watch with me. I did tell him to book it earlier but he didn't listen to me.

Though last time I stayed up, my constituency didn't declare results until the morning and I missed it as I'd finally fallen asleep.

Got a about 10 friends around. Planning on staying up until 4ish. Friday off work. Hoping beyond hope for a Portillo moment. Hard to believe how much worse this lot of Tories are compared to the 1997 crop. Think Farage will get in which will be sad but this hopefully will be countered out by some others being knocked out.
Watching Channel 4.
We all work on the front line on various guises (NHS, homeless services, mental health and community work) and have seen the devastation first hand of what the deliberate destruction of our places of work has resulted in. We live in an area where you can see the pain of poverty and it's unforgivable. I hope beyond hope we get rid of this lot for a long long time. However I fear people don't really get how bad it is for the most vulnerable, how women are being forced to live in violence for years because there is no alternative accommodation or support.

I think I have found my people! Love the bingo card idea!

Echobelly · 02/07/2024 08:04

I think I might see exit polls, get an early night and set an alarm for 4am-ish to watch things properly roll in. Or might not set an alarm and just see if I remember to check my phone the first time I wake up and it's light!

agoodfriendofthethree · 02/07/2024 08:07

I'll be counting votes!

I always wanted to do that, how do you volunteer? Or is it a specific job?

Go to bed, when I wake up in the morning I'll have a moron as prime minister.

GHSP · 02/07/2024 17:15

Exit polls at 10pm then bedtime until 2am or so - then all-night rolling breakfast with nibbles and a traybake made in party political colours. I’m a politics nerd and now all
my kids are in their teens I’m keen to create a bit of a party atmosphere. We don’t watch football, but it’s handy that there are some
games on at the moment as the shops are doing lots of special offers on BBQ and party food.

agoodfriendofthethree · 02/07/2024 17:28

@Pipsqueaker I've always thought it would be interesting, so when they announced the election I googled it and found a speculative application form on my local council's website where you could register your interest in all the different election roles. I filled in my details and got a phone call a couple of weeks later offering me a count assistant position. I think pay varies by council/role, but I'm getting £17.25 an hour which I'm pleased with for an interesting night's work! Apparently now I'm in their system I'll get invited back for every election 😊

Amazing! I’m totally doing that next time, I bet the atmosphere will be great!

I'm on holiday, and DH and DS think I'm mad for wanting to stay up. We have 2 rooms both with a tv and bbc news. I may get a bottle of wine and make them top and tail 😂

caringcarer · 02/07/2024 18:03

DH and I will have home made pizzas, a few other snacks and a bottle or so of wine and stay up and watch it all night.

afaloren · 02/07/2024 18:34

I wanted to buy a bottle of champagne but my husband says we mustn’t tempt the wrath of the whatever from high atop the thing Grin

Nice food, stay up for the exit poll, nap, with a bit of luck bubbles with breakfast! We’ve both got the day off.

Zwicky · 02/07/2024 18:43

I’ve booked Friday off and I’m staying up with pizza and cocktails. I might have a snooze after Sunderland declares until 2ish when the results start to come in a bit faster. I’m leaning towards channel 4 too but will probably hop about and see who has the best swingometer. Back to bed by 5ish and up again for Rishi’s resignation (I’ve got 11-11:30am in the work sweep, which I think is a bit late)

Eyesopenwideawake · 02/07/2024 18:46

Friend coming round for dinner; champagne on ice until 10pm. Bed by 11, up at 4ish for some serious gloating. Sadly I have a busy Friday morning so it will be tea rather than vodka.

hexsnidgett · 02/07/2024 19:27

I hope you are all voting first before buying champagne as if it is all a foregone conclusion. Shock

To be fair you're not wrong whatever the outcome.

I'll be voting "not Tory" in my constituency based on what the data says I must do, but I'm not particularly confident in any of the fools in leadership.

Is Mr FishFinger about this year?

BirthdayRainbow · 02/07/2024 20:00

Results times apparently

2.30am Starmer.
3.30am Hunt.
4am Sunak and Farage.

I planned an all nighter with one of my children but they and another one of my dc are counting the votes.

Oh really? I might try and have a nap/wine blackout between 11 and 2 then and set an alarm for 2.20. Is this definite?

BirthdayRainbow · 02/07/2024 20:13

I saw it on line so can't guarantee but it's on a news site.

DaphneduM · 02/07/2024 20:16

Definitely an all nighter for me - I always stay up on election night. We both worked in the public sector and can't wait to see the back of the evil Tories.

My husband will be in bed, it will just be me. I will watch it on Channel 4 too - can't stand Laura Kuenssberg. Will get a bottle of champagne to toast our new government on Friday. I hope Labour get a massive majority. I want to see a brighter future with better health and education for my beautiful little grandsons. Time for the 99% of the people of this country to get a decent government working for them, rather than the craven 1%. Goodness I hope this will come to pass!!!!!

Zwicky · 02/07/2024 20:23

2am Kemi Bandnoch
3am Ian Duncan Smith
4.15 Boris
4.30 Reece Mogg
5.30 Liz Truss

Me too! Its my first time 😃

agoodfriendofthethree · 02/07/2024 20:54

@MamaGarl85 Mine too! I'm really excited, but also nervous that I'm going to suddenly lose the ability to count 😂
