Completely undecided who to vote for!

Itsrainingten · 25/06/2024 06:20

At the moment I am completely undecided who to vote for. I don't think I've ever been so unsure this close to an election before. Help me! Do I vote for what I believe in or do I vote to KTTO???

One question to ask yourself is so you want more of the same after the last 14 years? Or do you want change?

SausageRoll2020 · 25/06/2024 08:02

The best thing to do is to read the manifestos but if that feels too time consuming try www.whogetsmyvote.org it asks how you agree with 25 different statements and shows you which party you are most aligned with, from what I can tell it's unbiased.

boys3 · 25/06/2024 08:03

What is it that you believe in? And which party aligns best, recognising none of them are likely to be a perfect mirror of you.

4 million kids living in poverty. Over 7 million people on NHS waiting list. You could always focus your mind on those as a starter for your decision.

whatever your decision don’t sit at home on July 4th, do get out and vote.

BIWI · 25/06/2024 08:06

Do you really want to vote Tory, after a) what they've done over the last 14 years and, b) the state of the current party? That's where you start.

Then read the manifestos of the other parties - Labour, Lib Dems and Greens (please don't bother with Reform!), and make your choice out of one of those.

If you want to vote tactically, then put your postcode into this site and it will tell you who to vote for in your constituency.

Itsrainingten · 25/06/2024 08:47

Jeez! I'm not voting Tory! My values align with he Greena or Lib Dems - love their higher minimum wage for care work policy - for the most part, or but as DH says "you may as well vote for unicorns" since they'll not get in. My question is really do I vote with my heart or hold my nose and vote labour? They just feel like more of the same though really. I can't decide whether to be tactical and vote Labour to get rid of torys because in my area that IS the only other possible seat.

I think in your situation I'd vote tactically. It sounds like the most important thing is getting rid of the Tories so I'd do my bit to do that if I were you.

I'm in the same boat. I want to vote Green because the environment is the biggest issue for me. But they haven't a hope of getting in and everyone says vote tactically to keep the tories out. My view is that the tories will be wiped out anyway so why not follow my heart?

Tutulechapeau · 25/06/2024 09:15

Why are folk holding their nose to vote Labour ? I really don’t understand this.

Itsrainingten · 25/06/2024 09:18

Because they're currently more to the right than the Lib Dems! Their policies really aren't THAT different to the Tories.

OP posts:
CassieMaddox · 25/06/2024 09:19

I'd look on electoral calculus at the stats for your seat then decide. If the chances of the Tories losing are high (like 85%+) I'd vote for who you want.

www.electoralcalculus.co.uk/newseatlookup.html

Voting for e.g. Greens or LD is one way to keep the pressure on regarding environmental issues or Europe. So it's important even if it isn't a vote for "the winner"

Wetellyourstory · 25/06/2024 09:25

My concern is the number of posters across various threads who are saying they would vote Labour just to get the Tories out.

Voting for any party is showing your support for many, if not all, of their policies. Even though I acknowledge that we need change, I cannot vote for a party when I don’t agree with some of their policies.

As long as voters know what they are showing their support for, rather than a “let’s get the Tories out” vote, then that’s fine. I’m still an undecided as we have a few independents running around here and they may end up with my vote. None of the major parties appeal at the moment and I see that as the best way to signify that I don’t support the various manifestos. We will still have a Labour government but if people voted based on what they agree with, rather than don’t want, it may show to Labour that they don’t have as large a support as they think and there is still room for them to improve.

Its not that difficult to understand surely?

It'll either be because they have one or more policies you profoundly disagree with, or because you dislike or distrust their leader/ the party, or because you feel they have had an awful long time in opposition to come up with a clear and cohesive vision and direction and strategy that they want to take the country in and have completely failed to do so.

I wouldn't trust KS as far as I could throw him. His actions has shown him to me to be a cynical opportunist. I don't think its at all clear what his Labour party stands for and I don't want to vote for that. Them Not Being The Tories is not enough for me personally to vote for them and I think its rather depressing that they have so failed as a party that Them Not Being the Tories seems to be the reason most people are voting for them. I can remember when Tony Blair came to power and there was such energy. People were voting for something positive then, it was a positive vote for the Labour Party, but now its just a negative vote against the Tories. I see that as a fail for the Labour Party.

I would say follow your heart as it is not a wasted vote. If the smaller parties, such as Greens/Lib dems, get an increased share of the vote, it shows to the two main parties that their policies were supported even if they didn’t win many seats. As a result, if the main parties want to increase their share of the vote next time round, they will need to win these voters over. They’ll do this by adopting/using some of the other parties ideas, in the same way that Labour/Tories will have policies to appease both sides of their parties.

Itsrainingten · 25/06/2024 09:34

". I can remember when Tony Blair came to power and there was such energy. People were voting for something positive then, it was a positive vote for the Labour Party, but now its just a negative vote against the Tories. I see that as a fail for the Labour Party."

This. Exactly. I really don't WANT to vote for Labour but I'm worrying I don't I'm effectively helping keep the Tories in.

I think I will vote for what I believe in though. Maybe. I'm not sure. Aagghh.

I cannot vote for a party when I don’t agree with some of their policies.

There is not a single party where I agree with all of their policies, so that approach would leave me unable to vote at all.

For me, it's about the extent to which basic values align and where my vote is most likely to make a difference. I am not inspired by the current iteration of the Labour Party but I will vote for them as that is my best hope of getting rid of our truly dreadful Tory MP.

Itsrainingten · 25/06/2024 09:38

I think this shows that Labour have enough of a lead in my area that I'd be safe to vote LD or Green without risking conservatives. What do you think?

Completely undecided who to vote for!

I'd vote to get a party I didn't want out, within reason.

In my case, I'm voting for the only party who can see off the SNP who happen to be the Lib Dem's. For me it's a toss up between them and Labour so a tactical element swings my vote to Lib Dem. I would not vote for a party that did not align with my principles at all (Reform who are thankfully polling at pretty much zero here).

Shedbythebins · 25/06/2024 09:42

I am voting SDP. It closely aligns with my values. No they won't win. But this country is desperate for political reform. If everyone stopped taking the view they won't vote for smaller parties it will never change

EmmaGrundyForPM · 25/06/2024 09:43

I did one of those "who gets my vote" type of quizzes and came out pretty evenly split between Labour, LD and Green. I'm.naturally a Labour member but wish we had PR so the smaller parties got the representation they deserve. Although that would also include Reform......

Where I live, there's a Tory MP with a pretty good majority but I think the seat might well go to Labour.

I don't understand why people are saying they wouldn't trust Starmer as far as they could throw him. I'm not a fan of Starmer, but I do think he has integrity.

heathspeedwell · 25/06/2024 09:45

Starmer has no integrity at all. Look at how he has treated Rosie Duffield for having the temerity to try to protect women's rights.

Lovetotravel123 · 25/06/2024 09:52

Vote for the one who most closely reflects your values. Labour still haven’t really clarified where all the extra money is coming from for all this ‘fixing’ and don’t seem to have any real solutions.

CurlewKate · 25/06/2024 10:02

@Itsrainingten " They just feel like more of the same though really."

In what ways?

Itsrainingten · 25/06/2024 10:17

@CurlewKate they haven't come up with a single radical policy that I feel would make a big change to everyone's lives. Please name one.
In fact just trying to read through their manifesto is painful. The LD and Greens are all about positivity, the whole thing with Labour genuinely seems to be trying to appeal to voters on the basis that they're not the conservatives.
